Damn Small Linux - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Damn Small Linux was originally conceived and maintained by John Andrews, but has grown into a large community project with many contributors, most notably Robert Shingledecker for the creation of the MyDSL system, DSL Control Panel, and much more.
Additionally, Damn Small Linux provides on-demand download for large programs such as OpenOffice.org and the GNU Compiler Collection as well as smaller apps like Xmms by means of the MyDSL system, which allows users the convenience of 1-click download and installation of apps (although most DSL users refer to all things MyDSL as extensions).
Damn Small Linux was also ported to the Xbox, which is made possible due to its low memory requirements.

Damn Small Linux is a very light-weight distribution, reduced to the bone, but it still offers almost anything one can desire to browse the web, create and edit text documents, listen to some music files, do some irc and message people.
DSL project started as a model_k fork (model_k was a knoppix-based mini-distro) but soon took its own way, although it is still based on knoppix.
Knoppix has a good hardware auto-detection system and DSL is no worse...all my hardware was detected fine: there is not so much to detect on this machine, as it has no usb (so i had no possibility to test usb-pen and external hard disk), but everything was working right out of the box.

DSL (Damn Small Linux) has been around for a while now, growing and improving constantly while never bloating beyond 50Mb.
This makes DSL rather unique, as it has a fully functional desktop provided by fluxbox, and fantastic hardware support and yet it still remains small enough to fit on a business-card size cd, and fast enough to run on older systems reliably.
DSL can also be installed to a USB memory stick, which has been made even easier again by the team with the ‘install to USB pendrive’ option right on the menu.
