This album was released during a critical turning point in Petty's career - MCA had bought out the band's original label, ABC, and he was thrown into a corrupt and unmanageable record deal in which he knew almost none of his associates and didn't even have control over his own material.
Still, the album is much better than most professional critics are willing to admit (I guess every band has to have -one- bad album in their minds), and one of the definite highlights of the Heartbreakers' early period.
Petty's sixth album was originally intended as a conceptual solo project, but as more and more of his bandmembers contributed to the sessions it eventually became a full-fledged Heartbreakers album.
