  Damnatio memoriae - Definition, explanation
Damnatio memoriae (Latin for "damnation of memory", in the sense of removed from the remembrance) was a form of dishonor that could be passed by the Roman Senate upon traitors or others who brought discredit to the Roman Empire.
Upon passage of the damnatio memoriae, the person's name was stricken from any rolls of honor on which he may have appeared (some of them were called memoriae), and in the case of the Roman Emperors so condemned, their statues were destroyed and their name removed from public buildings.

 Damnatio memoriae
Damnatio memoriae: modern name for the official condemnation of the memory of a Roman emperor by the Senate.
It is the opposite of apotheosis, which means that a deceased emperor is believed to have ascended to heaven.
Apotheosis and damnatio memoriae are still recorded by the end of the fourth century and were, therefore, considered to be religious practices no longer; otherwise, the practice would have been abandoned after Constantine's conversion to Christianity.
