Damnation Alley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Damnation Alley is a novel by Roger Zelazny, and a 1977 film loosely based on the novel, directed by Jack Smight.
Hell Tanner, a convicted killer and the last Hell's Angel alive, is offered a full pardon in exchange for taking on a suicide mission - a drive through "Damnation Alley" across a ruined America from Los Angeles to Boston — as one of three vehicles attempting to deliver urgently needed plague vaccine.
"Damnation Alley" was rife with production problems (large sections of the film were edited out by the studio), and repeated delays in release.

 Zelazny's Damnation Alley
Damnation Alley is loosely based on the true story of Balto, the wolf-dog hybrid which rescued an Arctic town by delivering medicine during impassable winter weather.
Most of the country between California and Boston is known as the "Alley." It is heavily irradiated in many areas, and occupied by monstrous mutated animals or barbaric gangs in other places.
Damnation Alley is far more than simply a pulp-fiction action yarn because along with an often pulse-pounding road trip, the reader is also treated to Tanner's fascinating but very believable inner journey.

Scifilm -- Reviews, DAMNATION ALLEY (1977)
"Damnation Alley" is the connection between these nations; it's a badland of scorched earth, radioactive craters and a "mutation zoo" infested with hideous, mutated creatures.
DAMNATION ALLEY might have got away with these pee-poor FX in the 50s or even the 60s, but there's no excuse in the late 1970s.
DAMNATION ALLEY doesn't even work on the it's-so-bad-it's-good level (apart from Janice's amazing wandering accent)—it's just wholly tiresome, poorly acted and directed, utterly without inspiration and devoid of any dramatic tension—in fact everything a sci-fi movie needs to be successful is conspicuously absent in DAMNATION ALLEY.

 : RevolutionSF - Damnation Alley : Review
A slim, rough-and-tumble volume, Roger Zelazny's feisty SF thriller Damnation Alley (Berkley; 1969; out-of-print) would've made a great premise for B-movie maven Roger Corman: a skuzzy and violent biker named Hell Tanner is picked to drive across the post WWIII America from Los Angeles to Boston to deliver the serum to stop a deadly plague.
Damnation Alley is hardly "hard" SF: by 1969, it was common knowledge that the massive doses of radiation released by an atomic war would not cause spiders and bats to grow 500 times their normal size.
The first man to cross Damnation Alley (what the survivors call the wasteland between the coasts), Brady died from his injuries soon after arriving, and only left scattered, fevered descriptions of the horrors on the road.

Damnation Alley (1977) - The Bad Movie Report
When most people mention Damnation Alley, it is to reference one of two things: the opening segment, often sited as "one of the most chilling representations of nuclear war", or the totally boss RV our heroes use to tool around in.
Damnation Alley, despite its effects, looks and feels like it was shot for the small screen.
Unfortunately, the movie that Damnation Alley seems to be reinventing is The Incredible Journey, a 60s family film that followed two dogs and a cat as they trekked across country to their home.

Damnation Alley has acquired something of a bad reputation over the years, and to some extent I can understand why.
Then again, Damnation Alley’s vision of post-nuclear America is unusually convincing, and much more serious than what would become the norm in the 1980’s.
Denton has also identified a relatively safe route— which he dubs “Damnation Alley”— between his base and Albany, New York, which the Landmasters should be able to traverse without much difficulty.

'Damnation Alley' is a book about America after a terrible Nuclear Holocaust in which most of the world's population has died and almost all of the USA is uninhabitable.
The end section doesn't quite deliver the climax the story really deserves but 'Damnation Alley' is still a worthy addition to the classic SF bookshelf.

Anyhow, in 1967 he became a Captain in the flick "Tobruk," where he remained for three movies, until he made Major in "Damnation Alley." And in 1983, he became the beloved Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith in the immortal TV show "The A-Team," co-starring, of course, Mr.

After the "Big Raid" only a few places in America are inhabitable and these have become countries unto themselves with little contact with the other countries that are left, mostly due to a world where mother nature has gone mad.
Damnation Alley is what lies between the countries, bad lands of scarred glass and radioactive craters, populated by giant creatures and covered by the dead zone, winds that circle the globe at an altitude of a few hundred feet, tearing apart mountains and throwing boulders like hail.
Across this amazing landscape a man named Hell Tanner, must drive from the Country of California to the Country of Boston carrying a vaccine for a deadly plague.

Damnation Alley....a truly terrible film (it's a shame that the makers didn't stick to the Roger Zelazny novel on which it was supposed to be based as they would have had something as innovative, cinematically, as Mad Max 2).
It does have one memorable sequence though, at the beginning when the nuclear war is in progress: in an underground control bunker a huge illuminated map is showing the cities of America disappearing one by one and the air force personnel are watching this with a matter-of-fact calmness that is chilling.
