'Damned, Damned, Damned' reached number 36 in the UK charts in Februay 1977, the same year second album 'Music For Pleasure' was released in November.
On the live front, the Damned were unstoppable, chaotic, violent, messy, funny and unpredictable, riding out punk's supposed death with a series of fiery performances laden with both great playing and notable antics on and off stage.
Predictions that The Damned were history with the departure of Sensible proved a nonsense as 'Phantasmagoria' (1985) scored a massive U.K. hit with a cover of 'Eloise' which charted at number 3.

The Damned's first single "New Rose" remains a classic of early punk rock, described by one critic as "deathless anthem of nuclear-strength romantic angst untroubled by bad vibes." [1] It is a cheaply-recorded, but catchy and well-crafted pop song, 'punk' mostly in its volume and breakneck delivery.
The Damned were not generally respected at this point, having been accused by punks of being opportunists and poseurs, and by the wider public of being one hit wonders.

The group's hat trick of 'firsts' came with the release of their debut LP "Damned Damned Damned", in February '77 which hit No.34 in the UK Top 50 and was the very first punk LP to dent the charts.
But when they come out with something in the vein of Damned Damned Damned, we say, "Been there, done that." Well, it doesn't matter how "old" the sound is, The Damned are one of the few bands who can successfully revisit a sound they inspired 20 years ago.
Overall this is a solid and diverse Damned album that would please many different audiences, but I'm sure that The Damned are capable of putting together an effort that would be appreciated a lot more by the Darkwave audience if they would readopt more fully their mid 80's style.

With Vanian doing his Lugosi mugging at the front of the stage, it was hard for them to not contibute to the advent of Goth, which for The Damned I guess, peaked on Phantasmagoria.
All the Damned albums,are wonderful in their own special identity.That means that Damned were one of the few bands,which experimented with almost all styles,so as to be given the artistic credit in all of their releases.Still, my favourite is ''Machine gun etiquette'',a speedy progressive punk masterpiece,which contains everything for everyone.Ilove it along with ''Black album''.
When I saw the Damned on their reunion tour with Captain Sensible many moons ago, they didn't touch any material from it, and I was a little disappointed, even though I knew they weren't about to play their newer material.

Damned Damned Damned was a major groundbreaker, a stripped-down punk album of high-speed songs filled with raunchy guitar rock and equally aggressive sentiments.
The Damned's lineup of Vanian, Rat, Roman Jugg (the guitarist/keyboardist who joined in 1981) and Bryn Merrick (bass) lasted from 1984 until 1987, and stability proved deleterious to the band's creativity.
Despite the Damned's proven ability to alternately rock gothic and play nice, there's no audible point to the music; it's hard to imagine who would find this LP pleasurable.

Many will argue that Damned, Damned, Damned was the first UK punk album proper and it's hard to disagree with that.
Bolting out of the stocks months before the Pistols and the Clash committed to vinyl (remember that?) DDD arrived in the summer of punk as a flash of lightning at the time of "Frampton Comes Alive" and "Wings at the Speed of Sound" and put punk on course for the mainstream.
I didn't hear of The Damned until years after this, their first LP release, so this was a dynamite blast of epic proportions after The Black Album.

Which is a damned, damned, damned shame, since new songs like “Democracy,” “She” and “Would You Be So Hot (If You Weren’t Dead?)” held their own most emphatically with the classic war horses and thoughtful album cuts that filled out Tuesday’s set.
Based on the total package delivered by the Damned Tuesday night, I think they’ve still got it in ’em to earn another important page or two in tomorrow’s musical history books, which should make for a damned, damned, damned good read.

At just half an hour long, Damned Damned Damned is a permanent testimony to original guitarist Brian James' songwriting (ten of the 12 tracks are his) and the band's take no prisoners aesthetic.
His sense of stop-start rhythm and fills is simply astounding, whether on "So Messed Up" or in his own one-minute goof, "Stab Yer Back." Though the Captain doesn't get his full chance to shine on bass, he's more than adequate, while James just cranks the amps and lets fly.
Concluding with a version of the Stooges' "I Feel Alright" which sounds hollower than the original but no less energetic, Damned Damned Damned is and remains rock at its messy, wonderful best.

Remember Stiff were an independent label and their lack of distribution for The Damned records probably hampered their success.
Big pounding drums, monster riff all with an infectious joyous rush of speed that makes you want to move.
I think The Damned were particular favourites and their sessions were always a bit special especially round The Machine Gun Etiquette era where they tended to loosen up in the studio and let rip and muck around.
