Damocloids are asteroids such as 5335 Damocles and 1996 PW that have Halley family or long-period highly eccentric orbits typical of periodic comets such as Comet Halley, but without showing a cometary coma or tail.
Damocloids are believed to be nuclei of Halley-type comets that have lost all their volatile materials due to outgassing.
Damocloids are reddish in color, but not as red as many Kuiper belt objects or Centaurs.

 Damocloid family
Because of this similarity, it is thought that Damocloids may be the dark remains of old comets.
The prototype of the group, (5335) Damocles, was discovered in 1991 by Robert McNaught (1956-) at the Anglo-Australian Observatory and named for a courtier of the ancient tyrant Dionysus I (The Elder) of Syracuse who lived in the fourth century BC.
Another suspected Damocloid, asteroid 2001 OG108, discovered in July 2001, has an orbit that takes it from just inside Earth’s orbit out as far as Uranus.

Damocloids are the inactive nuclei of Halley Family Comets.
This is because a) some objects identified as Damocloids by the above criterion have subsequently developed comae: they are comets without a doubt b) the distribution of inclinations of Damocloids is indistinguishable from that of the Halley Family Comets, even though the Tisserand selection criterion does not require that this be the case.

The Damocloids are a group of asteroids with highly eccentric and inclined orbits, similar to those of Halley Family Comets.
Several Damocloids have already exhibited cometary activity and the dissimilarity of their orbits and Jupiter Family Comet orbits lend credence to the hypothesis.

So, in the name of consistency, it is very difficult for me to consider damocloids and ignore comets.
I know it will take me a long time before I figure that out, especially because Damocloids like this one, travelling from the inner to the outer solar system, are dynamically and physically very different from centaurs and transneptunians.

The Damocloids are comets of the Halley-type family, for which there is no evidence of outgassing-a sign that their gas reservoirs have been exhausted.
He concluded that since the Damocloids do reach temperatures sufficient to cause water sublimation, the lack of ultrared matter results from repeated episodes of outgassing.
Thus, the existence of the Damocloids confirms an important prediction of the old-earth creationist model while refuting the corresponding young-earth creationist prediction.

Called Damocloids after the first of their kind discovered, 5335 Damocles, these asteroids have elliptical orbits that resemble those of short-period comets like Comet Halley.
Because Damocloids mimic the course of short-period comets, astronomers suspect these unique asteroids might actually be "dead" comets.
In its present orbit, the Damocloid will not come any closer to us than about 30 million miles (about 50 million kilometers), or about 125 times the distance between Earth and its moon.

Going down to 1-km diameter, the present surveys are progressing very well, and while they may fail to reach the "Spaceguard Goal" by 2008, they should get there in not much longer than that.

The near-infrared spectrum, the geometric albedo, and the visible spectrophotometry all indicate that C/2001 OG108 has spectral properties analogous to the D-type, and possibly P-type asteroids.
Comparison of the measured albedo and diameter of C/2001 OG108 with those of Damocloid asteroids reveals similarities between these asteroids and this comet nucleus, a finding which supports previous dynamical arguments that Damocloid asteroids could be composed of cometary-like materials.
These observations are also consistent with findings that two Jupiter-family comets may have spectral signatures indicative of D-type asteroids.
