In fact, for the release of the double A-sided single of 'July' and 'I Am The News', the tracks were remixed and re-recorded by Steve Cradock and Damon Minchella, who were unhappy with the original album versions.
The riff was written by Steve Cradock and Damon Minchella in early 1997, with Simon Fowler adding his lyrics about 18 months later.
Emily Chambers is, according to Damon Minchella, a pseudonym for Simon Fowler.

Falling between the energetic pop/rock of mod revival and the psychedelic experimentations of Traffic, Ocean Colour Scene came to be one of the leading bands of the traditionalist, post-Oasis British rock of the mid-'90s.
At the same time the Boys were active, Fowler and Minchella were in a Velvet Underground-influenced group called Fanatics, who released an EP, Surburban Love Songs, on the independent label Chapter 22 in the spring of 1989.
By the end of the 1993, Cradock, Fowler, and Minchella were all playing in Weller's band.

OCS bassist Damon Minchella told Melody Maker magazine the project went ahead after Noel said he wanted to join the Brummie fourpiece.
Damon explained: "Noel said, 'I would love to be in your band - you're just like my band but you don't have to be in the papers every day'." Noel's association with a group having the dubious honour of an even worse reputation for drug-taking worried the Oasis management.
Damon said: "We did a tour with them and the tour manager refused to let us stay in the same hotel because we were leading THEM astray." But soon after, the chart-topping stars ganged together to perform their track at the OCS studio in Birmingham.

I then happened to look up to see Damon Minchella (the OSC bass player for those who don't know) casually walking through an aisle towards the soundboards (which was three rows in front of where I was).
Simon Fowler was obviously up for a good night and sang with 100% effort on this number (as with every other song too may I add) to match the energy of the album rendition.
Damon was having a blast too with his bass guitar, constantly walking over the huge amps and playing in front of them, as well as kneeling down in front of the people at the front of the stage.

Digging around in my archives the other day I came across some totally ancient photographs of Damon Minchella playing bass with what I think may have been his first ever band.
If my memory serves me correctly they were called Transaction (their average age was 16) and they played some original stuff and covers such as the Undertones 'Teenage Kicks' and Black Sabbaths 'Paranoid'.

Maybe it was because his band included Steve Craddock and Damon Minchella from Ocean Colour Scene who played live with Paul around the time of his Stanley Road LP but whatever the reason, I wasn't complaining.
Paul played a massive six songs from Stanley Road including superb versions of the title track and Changingman, possibly his theme song for the 90s as well as a beautiful Time Passes, Broken Stones, Porcelain Gods and Out Of The Sinking.
All in all then an excellent gig, refreshingly all down to the five musicians - Weller, Craddock, Minchella, Paul's long-tome drummer Steve White and a keyboardist - rather than backing tapes or an overuse of special effects or video screens.
