		Single-arch dams are curved upstream and are usually constructed in narrow canyons or gorges where the rocky side walls are strong enough to withstand the tremendous lateral thrust of the dam that is caused by the pressure of the water.
		Dams may also be constructed with roller-compacted concrete, in which thin layers of concrete are compacted as if they were earth layers; this produces a far stronger dam, without the need for full forms.
		The Oroville Dam, located in California, the tallest in the United States, is 770 ft (235 m) high; the Rogun Dam, in Russia, the tallest in the world, is 1,100 ft (335 m) high.

		Sun Yat-sen first proposed building a dam on the Yangtze River in 1919 for power generation purposes and the National Defense Planning Commission under the Kuomintang made the first survey of the proposed site in 1932, but the idea was shelved due to unfavorable political and economic conditions.
		Probe International asserts that the dam does not address the real source of flooding, which is the loss of forest cover in the Yangtze watershed and the loss of 13,000 kmÂ² of lakes (which had greatly helped to alleviate floods) due to siltation, reclamation and uncontrolled development.
		This was a contributing cause of the Banqiao Dam failure in 1975 that precipitated the failure of 61 other dams and resulted in over 200,000 deaths.

		At Soda Dam, the colorful veil and flowing appearance reflect the cumulative deposits of thousands of years of minerals, dissolved from rocks deep under the earth, and brought to the surface by the hot springs rising along the fault.
		The bubbles that can be seen rising in the spring waters of Soda Dam are gases dissolved in the water at depth, which on reaching the surface are released into the atmosphere, similar to bubbles in a carbonated drink are released from a bottle or can when opened.
