The diamond's name was Dan Abnett, and his series of Gaunt's Ghost novels have rivaled any military science fiction released within the past two years.
Abnett doesn't analyze each engagement frame by frame, spewing technical details of the aircraft involved, but rather sets a scene and lets the action roll.
Surprisingly, Abnett may be at his best not on the battlefield but in the heads and hearts of his characters.

In my opinion, Dan Abnett is far and away the most accomplished author in the current Black Library fold.
Also, as a number of the main characters also appeared in the Eisenhorn trilogy, there are allusions to some of their pasts which were detailed in that series but which will be unfamiliar to readers of just this book.
Abnett has reached a new level in his writing style, making it virtually impossible to put this book down.

Dan is well known for his comic work with DC and Marvel comics, where he has worked on such strips as Superman and X Men.
In Horus Rising, Dan Abnett paints a portrait of Horus and his Luna Wolves Legion as sympathetic characters who are loyal to the tenets of the Emperor's Great Crusade to a fault.
Dan Abnett is an excellent writer with a gift for developing his characters.

If M. Abnett has a weakness, it's his endings, during which his plot devices can become a little too abrupt and a little less believable, but this is a minor annoyance in an otherwise excellent whole.
Abnett's Eisenhorn trilogy, and while I enjoyed it a great deal, I did sense that some central character was missing from the story, or not focused on enough to provide a certain intensity of conflict.
But so far, Dan Abnett know what he is doing, he is moving the story, from simple drug dealing problem (flect) to the use of forbidden technology and machines in a sinister cartel that goes to the top of the sub sector administration, and beyond.

Once again, Dan Abnett weaves a tale composed of numerous individual experiences where human beings overcome or are overwhelmed by adverse circumstances, emerging from the receding tide as heroes (martyred or surviving as the case may be) or tragic examples of human failings.
In this manner, Abnett subjects them to one of the more antiquated forms of combat, that being trench warfare as in World War I, with chemical weapons in use.
While antiquated with respect to their usual mode of combat (something mentioned explicitly several times), it is occurring on a planet for which that is the level of development.

Ravenor is the start of a new sequence which continues the lives of some characters from Dan Abnett's previous novels.
Unlike most comic book writers who try their hand at novels, Abnett excels at characterisation as well as fast paced action.
What's presented in this first outing is a highly cinematic read, in which Abnett delivers a convincing, intricately constructed future, filled with interesting characters, and the promise of much more to come.

DAN ABNETT ON WARHAMMER 40,000 - NEWSARAMA

The 40K universe could make for some awesome comics, and Dan Abnett is just the writer to do it.
The novels Abnett refers to, published by the Black Library, are notoriously mediocre (note that I have not read any of Abnett's books, though I have read some BL books- I am only passing along the generally accepted opinion of 40K players and fans).

Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning were very generous and took the time to answer some questions about the upcoming four issue Nova mini-series that is part of 2006's cosmic event 'Annihilation'!
I'd like to thank Dan and Andy for their time and answers!
Dan writes his own stuff: novels for the Black Library and comic strips for 2000AD, and Andy is an inker on such books as Infinite Crisis and FF, so it's always fun to get together every other week and thrash out some stories.

Emerald City: Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Reviews - #127
And Abnett’s background as a comics writer comes through quite a bit, particularly in the fight scenes.
You can tell that he’s thinking about how the action will look as a panel when he is writing it, which tends to make it a lot easier to visualize what is going on that if you are reading action described by someone who has never worked closely with artists.
Nor, at last as far as the first volume of the series is concerned, has Abnett tired to go for the sort of depth of political sophistication that Karen Traviss talks about putting into her Star Wars books.

While Dan Abnett should be no stranger to comic book readers — Abnett has written or co-written “2000AD” in his native England, “Superman and “X-Men” and relaunched “The Legion of Super-Heroes” back in 2000.
At the same time, Abnett has been writing science fiction novels set in the “Warhammer 40K” universe.
