Dan Daly is perhaps best remembered for a famous battle cry delivered during the desperate fighting in Belleau Wood in June 1918.
Very little is known about Daly's early life other than the fact of his birth in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York, on 11 November 1873, and the fact that he was a newsboy and something of a fighter for his weight and size.
Dan Daly's service was varied and included sea duty aboard the USS Newark, Panther, Cleveland, Marietta, Mississippi, Ohio, and Machias.

The Daly steamed to Milne Bay on February 22 to participate in operations in the Admiralty Islands at Los Negros Island at the eastern tip of Manus Island, and Seeadler Harbor bounded on three sides by Los Negros Island on the east and north and Manus Island on the south.
The Daly steamed from Sydney to Humboldt Bay at Hollandia in New Guinea, and on September 11 sorted from Humboldt Bay northwestward for the invasion of Morotai.
The Daly participated in the surface Battle of Surigao Strait, a phase of the decisive Battle for Leyte Gulf.

Daly and a force of 48 Marines and three sailors under the command of Capt. John T. Myers arrived in the capital on May 31, 1900, shortly before the city was surrounded by the Boxers.
The most famous of Daly's now-legendary exploits throughout the July-August defense of Legation Quarter was during the afternoon of July 13 when German soldiers had been driven back from their position on the east end of the wall.
Dan Daly received his first Medal of Honor for volunteering to stay alone on the bastion of the wall while undergoing constant fire from the enemy on the night of July 15.

On December 11, 1901 Daly was awarded the Navy issue Medal of Honor.  The citation for his first of two awards of the Navy Medal of Honor reads; "In the presence of the enemy during the battle of Peking, China, 14 August 1900, Daly distinguished himself by meritorious conduct."
Daly's citation reads; "Serving with the Fifteenth Company of Marines on 22 October 1915, Gunnery Sergeant Daly was one of the company to leave Fort Liberte, Haiti, for a six day reconnaissance.
Daly remained single his entire life and retired from the Corps February 6, 1929 as a Sergeant Major.

Daly thinks a rifle locked in the trunk of an SUV is "scary to even think about" then he presumably never visits Virginia, where residents like myself have the right to carry concealed handguns, even inside (gasp!) sports stadiums.
