Dan DeCarlo (December 12, 1917 - December 19, 2001) was arguably one of the most widely-viewed (A magazine devoted to comic strips) comic book (A person whose creative work shows sensitivity and imagination) artists of the 20th century, and one of the most prolific in terms of output.
While DeCarlo had a long and varied career, he is best known for his work at (Click link for more info and facts about Archie comics) Archie comics, where in the (The decade from 1950 to 1959) 1950s he developed what would become the characters' official "look" and the publisher's house style.
In his later years he was involved in a bitter legal dispute with Archie Comics over ownership of the Josie and the Pussycats characters, which were to be featured in a well-publicized motion picture then in development.

Dan DeCarlo, a top cartoonist for Archie Comics for more than 40 years and a creator of the characters Josie and the Pussycats and Sabrina the teenage witch, died on Tuesday in New Rochelle, N.Y. He was 82, and lived in Scarsdale, N.Y. The cause was pneumonia, said his wife, Josie.
DeCarlo gave the blond Betty Cooper her distinctive ponytail and kept up with what teenagers were wearing, from miniskirts and Nehru jackets in the 1960's to baby T-shirts and cargo pants in the 90's.
DeCarlo was born in New Rochelle and attended New Rochelle High School and the Art Students League for three years before he was drafted into the Army in 1941; he worked as a draftsman and had a sideline, painting company mascots on the noses of airplanes.

Next to the innocence that was Riverdale, however, and unbeknownst to many, DeCarlo also populated another world, which he filled with cartoons featuring girls in lingerie (and sometimes less), and often bearing an uncanny resemblance to his perennial blonde next door and rich-bitch socialite.
DeCarlo's cheery caricatures seem out of place in the blatantly risqu world of dirty pictures, unable to match the erotic appeal of more illustrative pin-up artists.

They were being adapted into a live-action feature film with Rachel Leigh Cook in the title role (it was released in April, 2001 and subsequently forgotten), and the 80-year-old cartoonist demanded his financial due as Josie's creator.
A lawsuit followed, and DeCarlo (who, by the way, in addition to having created Josie et al., also created the current version of the company's house style) found himself suddenly out in the cold, after 43 years — and subsequently deluged with job offers from all over the comics industry.
DeCarlo also became an "un-person" at Archie Comics, not just fired from all the work he was doing for the company, but never so much as alluded to as part of the its history, despite his enormous contributions.

DeCarlo told the Comic Wire last week that it was next year's upcoming "Josie and the Pussycats" live action film that prompted him to sue for greater compensation for the property.
The Comics Journal has reported that Archie Comics had previously offered DeCarlo $35,000 for all claims to Josie, whom the artist says was originally based on his wife and intended for a newspaper strip.
We assumed that Dan and his attorney simply did not understand that, under the copyright law, as a commissioned work, Dan's contribution to the creation of the 'Josie' property constituted a work-for-hire owned by Archie Comics.

Cartoonist Dan DeCarlo, 81, should be basking in the hoopla surrounding "Josie and the Pussycats," the big-screen adaptation that opened Wednesday.
DeCarlo says that "Josie" began as a comic strip idea he shopped around to syndicates in the late '50s and early '60s.

We have now got to pay the price for not looking over your traditional abusive manner and calling it for what it is, a tactic that has brought shame to not only the company and those who honestly work for you, but for comics in general.
Well, Archie's is doing a much better job of beating over Dan's grave than me. Hell, instead of resolving this issue with the family while containing their ego, Archie's management is hoping that time and dirt well cover up their latest abusive folly.
Dan DeCarlo is just one of many old time creators who is getting/got fisted by their company, just his is a bit more recent.

In 1961, after he'd been free-lancing for Archie for a few years, DeCarlo resurrected Josie, took the strip into Archie Comics' president and publisher Richard Goldwater Jr., and asked if he and his father--Richard Sr., editor-in-chief--would be interested in trying to sell Josie as a strip.
The suit claims that DeCarlo wouldn't receive another royalty check from Archie until December 11, 1998, in the amount of $1,406.25--"with no explanation for how the amount was calculated," Seymour says.
DeCarlo would find that out later--when the company told him 43 years' worth of servitude wasn't worth a dime.

Dan DeCarlo was born in the city of New Rochelle, NY on December 12, 1919, to Vincent, a landscape gardener, and Beatrice, a housewife.
Only a few months ago Dan and me were attempting to figure out when we would both be in the same area so we could finally meet in person.
