Books of The Times; A Marital Split Amid French Chic - New York Times
Dan Franck's novel "Separation" was first published in France in 1991 to enormous critical and popular acclaim, winning the prestigious Prix Renaudot and selling some 350,000 copies, a record that can be compared with that of Marguerite Duras's huge 1985 best seller, "The Lover."
Franck, "gave 10-franc coins to the panhandlers on the rue Mouffetard, and imbued the children, whom they called 'the boys,' with a multicultural education.
Franck has adopted this sketchy, minimalist approach in an effort to lend his story a kind of universal resonance: his hero is constantly drawing comparisons between his marital woes and the woes of others, between his travails as a cuckolded husband and the plight of men in general.

A Mysterious Silhouette, an Impossible Love - New York Times
Franck, a French novelist and screenwriter, is too minimalist an author to be seen as a major embodiment of this French association of isolation and love.
Franck's book ends up one of those works -- Josephine Hart's commercial blockbuster, ''Damage,'' is another that comes to mind in this connection -- whose actual development never quite comes up to the standard required by their literary pretensions.
Franck's concern is with the intrusions of political convulsions, the way that the messianic movements of the 20th century have made playthings of personal life.
