Dan Geer is one of a small number of pioneers in the security world that raised critical issues before others could see a risk emerge.
He is most recently known to many as the chief technical officer for @stake, a computer security consulting company that did work for large banks and technology vendors including Microsoft.
Geer has a Bachelor Of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT where he became a brother of the Theta Deuteron charge of Theta Delta Chi.

October 01, 2003 (Computerworld) Dan Geer, the former chief technology officer at @stake Inc. in Cambridge, Mass., was fired last week as a result of his participation in an independent study of the security implications of Microsoft Corp.'s monopoly hold on the software industry (see story).
Although Geer said he learned of his firing from a press release, James Mobley, president and CEO of @stake, said "a number of unreturned phone calls" were placed to Geer before that statement was issued.
Geer spoke to Computerworld's Dan Verton yesterday in an interview from his home in Massachusetts.

Dan Geer, a longtime computer security researcher, and several colleagues released a controversial study on Wednesday that called the ubiquity of Microsoft software a hazard to the economy and to national security.
Cambridge, Mass-based @Stake, where Geer worked as chief technical officer, said in a statement Thursday that the researcher had not gotten his employers' approval for the study's release, and that he was no longer associated with the company.
Security expert Bruce Schneier, another co-author of the report, said Geer had believed he was still employed when the two of them discussed their report on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday.

Dan Geer, one of the authors of last year's controversial paper on the subject of the Windows monoculture on the Internet, said that the assertions in the paper and his speech are not new and are beginning to draw the attention of legislators and government officials in the United States and abroad.

Dan managed (among other things) the systems programming group at Athena, which was mostly students -- some of those students have gone on to bigger and better things -- Ted Tso and John Kohl are amongst the most well know.
We were frequently in meetings that included Dan and parts of his staff, and I remember always being impressed and a little intimidated by Dan.
It's a loss for Dan, but he's so good that he won't have a problem finding work.

In other words, while it does suck for Geer, this may actually be the best PR the report could have hoped for.
Hopefully, with Geer's name recognition and reputation, he'll be able to easily find a new job somewhere else - that won't try to shut him up when he sees something that he feels is a real security concern.
I have personally attended a conference in which Dr. Geer spoke and was amazed at depth of his knowledge of security.
