In the Blue - Sunny Day Real Estate fan site - Chat transcript with Dan 10-19-2000
Dan doesn't necessarily feel this way, but I think the interviewer was extremely rude and immature (interrupting his answers by saying "Bullshit" and making badly timed fart/sex jokes).
The questions that made it into the interview were submitted by knuckleheads who just wanted to cause a ruckus who never even heard of SDRE (typical of a Yahoo chat).
As Dan spoke, another person was typing his answers out into the chat window.

Currently Dan and Chris Carrabba are working on a new EP together, and will be touring together with Dashboard Confessional in the coming months (I'll be catching them once in Philly, twice in New York, possibly once in Tennessee, and possibly twice in Florida be sure to say hi).

But when talk emerged of putting together a collection of unreleased and rare material, Enigk and Hoerner, who had been in touch after the band's demise, began working on a few new songs to include on the compilation.
Still, the soft-spoken Hoerner was a little uneasy after playing the band's first show in four years, and asked if I liked the new record.
While Hoerner and his cohorts have been notably reserved in the past by entertaining few, if any, press requests, Hoerner talks about the band in the third person, as if Sunny Day is its own entity or a sovereign separate from the played-out union of modern rock.

Guitarist Dan Hoerner takes a little time from Sunny Day's schedule to talk about emo, the new record and his gambling fetish.
Hoerner: You know, I just did an interview a little bit ago with this guy, and he was like, 'Don't you hate all these bands that are ripping off Sunny Day's sound and claiming they're influenced by Sunny Day?' I was like, 'You know, why would I hate that?

Jeremy began writing and composing solo material, and released an album entitled "Return of the Frog Queen," which was released by Sub Pop Records in 1996; he toured in support of the record with a nine piece orchestra, a third of what was used to record the album.
Dan also began playing with dashboard confessional, and appeared on one of the bands' eps.

Originally conceived as a three-piece (guitarist-vocalist Dan Hoerner, bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith), Sunny Day Real Estate garnered attention when it added enigmatic lead singer Jeremy Enigk, whose high-pitched, constantly ascending voice complimented their melodic songs.
The group was shrouded in mystery from the get-go: They released only one picture to the press, conducted one interview and, for some still-unknown reason, never played a show in the state of California with all four members intact.
In 1995, the group broke up, but not before releasing that year's LP2 (which, because of its single-hue layout design, is usually referred to as "The Pink Album") and prompting speculation as to whether Engik's born-again status was behind the break-up.

Mixing hard-core/punk intensity with complex arrangements and Enigk's passionate singing style, Sunny Day Real Estate was enormously influential in the 1990s; critics dubbed the sound "emo-core," and Sunny Day's sound nudged adventurous bands around the country in that direction.

The original lineup, consisting of Dan Hoerner, William Goldsmith, and Nate Mendel, was soon joined by singer Jeremy Enigk, whose unique voice began drawing interest from a large group of local fans.
Maybe their first mistake was recruiting producer Lou Giordano, who helped boost Live's "success" in the early nineties or maybe Jeremy Enigk was going for a more mainstream sound.
Dan Hoerner's complex guitar work is often absent from the album and the band's trademark sound seems less like Sunny Day and more like the standard cheese-rock groups dominating today's radio airwaves.

Where the older songs were a bit rough around the edges, the new songs sparkled like lusters on a chandelier, with each song reflecting the light and color of the others.
And while many bands lose an audience's attention mid-set, Enigk and Hoerner kept the energy level peaked, lowering the bar only for seconds between songs to graciously thank their fans.
And with a gushing remark by Hoerner ("Every time we play in New York, it gets better!"), they did, with three more emotive, soaring, moody melodies.

Diary, Sunny Day's scintillating 1994 debut, has been dropped countless times in recent years as a reference point by guitarists in emo bands indebted to SDRE guitarist Dan Hoerner's alloy of arpeggiated sparkle and power-chord crunch.
Yet the genre's current reliance on vocal dramatics of the angelic-and-tortured variety suggests that Enigk's singing has influenced younger musicians at least as much as his former bandmate's playing.
It was odd to find that out: 'Oh, wow, I have to fill in this heavier side to back up William's heaviness that Dan always filled in.' And I wasn't and still am not quite sure how to do that, so we're still kind of discovering our sound.

Where Hoerner's vocal style had been in the rougher, hardcore vein, Enigk's higher-pitched, somewhat strained vocal style added greater emotional depth to the band's songs.

They're as openly creative and nakedly sincere as their songs, and if that means they endure a lot of pain as a result, well, that's the way it is. "If I'm not creating music with this band, I'm not happy," says drummer William Goldsmith.
Goldsmith, Hoerner, Enigk, and Mendel are complex characters, and their interactions have as much in common with an Edward Albee play as they do with rock and roll.
Enigk promptly dove into Frog Queen, which included contributions from a 21-piece orchestra, and Hoerner and his wife settled down in rural Washington on property that he still owns.
