Daniel Urban Kiley is generally considered to be America's foremost postwar landscape architect.
Four landscape architecture professors, the archivist of the Kiley collection, and a practicing landscape architect here present analytical investigations of Kiley's rarely studied early housing projects and garden prototypes, his garden plans for the Hollin Hills subdivision in suburban Washington, and, in new ways, his best-known work, the Irvin Miller Garden.

Dan Kiley | The San Diego Union-Tribune
Dan Kiley, a seminal landscape architect who combined modernist functionalism with classical design principles in more than 1,000 projects, died Feb. 21 at his home in Charlotte, Vt. He was 91.
Kiley designed a wooded park to link the arch to the city, the river and the American West, but he was taken off the job over Saarinen's vigorous protests.
Kiley is survived by his sons, Kor of South Burlington, Vt., Christopher of Newtonville, Mass., Timothy of Newton Highlands, Mass., Caleb of Charlotte and Aaron of Ann Arbor, Mich.; his daughters, Kathleen Dunn of Burlington, Grace Kiley of Williston, Vt., and Antonia Holmes of Suffield, Conn.; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

 LAND Online Appreciation: Dan Kiley
Dan Kiley is legendary in Vermont, both within and outside of the design professions.
Dan was his own man. I met Dan in 1965 at the American Academy in Rome when he was in residence as one of the premier practicing landscape architects and I was a new Fellow.
Kiley was explaining that he was married to an artist as well as being one himself.

Dan Kiley Past + Present / The Cultural Landscape Foundation
Dan was thinner but retained his characteristic hair and slightly rumpled attire.
I am not sure what I thought Dan's office would be like (maybe a minimalist, white box), but I was taken aback by the rural if not rustic qualities of Dan's office and house.
His mastery of the grid as an organizational device and his thoughtful selection of plants work together to form a dynamic spatial sequence that is as rich as a walk in nature.

Wolf remembers Kiley as having "a profound respect for nature, a sense of things sublime." He and Kiley collaborated closely on the NCNB project, and as a result the garden was a magnificent synthesis of architecture and landscape architecture.
Kiley designed the garden as a formal extension of Wolf's concepts for the bank buildings; the geometric system of fenestration (windows) in the circular tower is echoed in the grid structure and its geometric proportions are repeated in the shapes that make up the garden.
Kiley's modernist aims were balanced by his desire to evoke the ancient theme of a paradise garden.

The Museum Gazette   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Architect Eero Saarinen and landscape architect Dan Kiley planned a landscape for the Arch which complements, enhances and echoes the graceful lines of the structure, while not calling attention to itself.
The original landscape design for the park was created by Dan Kiley, one of the country's leading contemporary landscape architects, who worked with Eero Saarinen from the beginning of the memorial competition in 1947.
Eero Saarinen had been insistent that Dan Kiley execute the construction documents and specification drawings, but this was not to be, and Kiley's last association with the project was in 1964.
