Lusthaus believes it’s crucial to recognize that Yogacara’s “attention to perceptual and cognitive issues is in line with basic Buddhist thinking and that this attention is epistemological rather than metaphysical” (69).
Lusthaus feels Yogacarins could be better described as epistemological idealists, who can be “ontological materialists, accepting that matter exists substantially,” but deny that matter can be known “in itself directly without the mediation of mental representations” (Lusthaus 67).
Lusthaus says this projective reductionism is “to mistake one’s projections for that onto which one is projecting” and is the central concern of the vijñaptimatra doctrine (69), or as King describes it:

Dan Lusthaus, a graduate of Temple University's Department of Religion, is a specialist in Yogācāra Buddhism.
The author of several articles and books on the topic, Lusthaus has taught at UCLA, Florida State University, the University of Missouri - Columbia, and in the spring of 2005 he was a professor at Boston University.
Lusthaus is an editor for the DDB, in the area of Indian/East Asian Yogācāra/Tathāgatagarbha.

 Review of Buddhist Phenomenology
In these first two chapters Lusthaus gives a welcome review of the various permutations and usages of the term "idealism," as understood by different branches of philosophy so that we may, later in the book, see exactly why the term is not applicable to what is going on in Yogācāra.
One of the most valuable aspects of Lusthaus' re-articulation of these categories is the plethora of alternative, and invariably more energetic and meaningful English renderings for Buddhist concepts (that have in many cases become stale in their established renderings), and his explanation of them with interesting and concrete metaphors drawn from everyday experience.
Lusthaus reminds us here the etymological connotations of saṃsāra as "closure," and that the term mātra, when used in combination with other terms, is invariably invoked to denote a limited type of singularity—again, a closure.

Lusthaus seems to subscribe to the queries of Ricoeur (mistyped as Ricouer, see ibid.) and Donn Welton to the effect that while dealing with intentionality, the phenomenology of Husserl fails to manage the "non-intentional things." This is quite an imagined culprit as there are neither intentional, nor non-intentional things at all.
Dan Lusthaus failed to provide evidence that the philosophy of Yogacara is the Buddhist phenomenology; just on the contrary, on several occasions, he proved that Husserl and Yogacara are at diametrically opposite philosophical standpoints.
While agreeing with Dan Lusthaus that the "watershed" between the 7 vijnanas and alaya-vijnana is running along the line of intentionality, I disagree that the first seven "intentionalities" are driven by the karmic intentionality of AV.

Dan Lusthaus is a specialist in Yogācāra Buddhism, the author of the book Buddhist Phenomenology: A Philosophical Investigation of Yogācāra Buddhism and the Ch'eng Wei-Shih Lun.
Dan also collaborated with Heng-ching Shih in the translation of Kuiji's commentary on the Heart Sūtra with the Numata translation project.
He is has made ongoing and extensive contributions to the DDB in the areas of Yogācāra, and Tathāgatagarbha, and is responsible for many of the core entries in the area of Buddhist Logic.

If Dan is right (have I got this right?), postmodern theory is actually reviving an old meaning of the term, preserved in its etymology.

I didn't see it then, so can't say what's been "revisited." But it's too bad the text wasn't better parsed as part of the remake; Charles L. Mee's breathy dream-prose doesn't have the eloquence of Clarke's disarming stage poetry.
Nonetheless, Vienna: Lusthaus fulfills the director's lyrical vision: It is an eerily sensual prelude to the new century's lust for violence.
