Dan Piraro's Bizarro benefited from good timing but too often became relegated to the burgeoning category of Far Side clone; however, no clone could so successfully entwine artistic virtuosity with a unique comedic perspective.
Yet after 17 years of deadline-mandated creativity, Piraro has refused to coast or repeat himself, and his peers in the National Cartoonists Society have acknowledged their respect for him by voting him the winner of its Best Newspaper Panel award for three years running, a string of victories without NCS precedent.
PIRARO: Well, these things are so complicated that it's hard to say, "It was because of this." What it came down to was that she was a pretty insecure woman.

Dan Piraro says his "The Bizarro Baloney Show" is a variety program that a 13-year-old boy "with fairly a lucrative paper route" might put on.
Piraro - who's best known as the author and illustrator of the "Bizarro" comic panel - said his show is a hodgepodge of "90 minutes of things I think I would like to do in front of strangers."
Piraro, 47, who lives in Brooklyn, took some time away from preparing to leave on his tour to talk about why he does the show and how he became an animal rights activist.

 Bizarro Baloney Show
Piraro first experimented with the show in Tulsa back in 2001 before he performed it at the International Fringe Festival.
Dan Piraro, a native Tulsan and author of the comic strip Bizarro, draws a comic as fourth-graders, teachers and parents look on Jan. 15, 2005, at Cooper Elementary School in Tulsa.
This time, the show's tour coincides with the release of his 14th book, "Bizarro and Other Strange Manifestations of the Art of Dan Piraro." The book is a retrospective of his cartoons, fine and commercial art, and includes a 10,000-word essay about his life and thoughts.
