Quayle and the teacher have both said that the card was handed to him misspelled by her.
Quayle's 1988 defense of this was (a) that lots of people tried to avoid going to Vietnam (certainly true), and (b) he might well have gotten into the national guard without Phillippi's help (which is also true although unlikely; all surviving evidence suggests that there was a long waiting list).
