Dan is the basic unit of rank used to denote go strength in the case of professionals and stronger amateurs.
A professional teacher may award dan rankings informally or formally (diplomas) to his or her students, possibly under the aegis of his or her national organization, and national organizations such as the Nihon Kiin award diplomas, sometimes based on rating tournaments.
Judan, which literally means "ten dan", is a tournament and the honorary title given to its winner, not a rank per se.

At 4th Dan, the WTSDA signifies rank by calling both Sah Dan "instructor" and Sah Dan Master "Sah Bum Nim." There are distinctive characteristics to each as one indicates a simple trainer and the other pledges to reproduce the Art to another generation.
Rank in the WTSDA is necessary to maintain order and training agenda, but is not carried over to a social rank in the community.

The judogi consists of cotton drawstring slacks and a quilted cotton jacket fastened by a belt indicative of kyu or dan rank.
Judoka are ranked according to skill and knowledge of judo, that grade being reflected in the color of his belt: There are two divisions of grades, the student grades (kyu, 級;), and the master grades (dan, 段).
In both cases this does not indicate their rank, but is to enable the judges and spectators to tell the opponents apart during a fight.

My dan ranks became pretty much worthless outside of the organizations that issued them the day some other organization started selling ranks, and a few commercial dojos started signing contracts guaranteeing you receive a fl belt after 36 months.
In the past, a dan rank didn't mean you made all the payments on your installment plan on time.

The contrasting color of fl (ranked) and white (unranked, colored kyu were not then in use) belts are laden with deeper symbolism.
The kyu/dan ranking and belt/uniform system was first adopted by karate in Japan (the first dans awarded by Gichin Funakoshi to seven students in 1924) as a means of gaining acceptance by the Butokukai.
As to ranking of fl belts, technically there are 10 progressive dan levels, first through tenth, but realistically, promotion within each system is limited to a level below that of the system's founder, chief instructor or inheritor.

KAMI : The highest ranking grade in Aikikai is 9th Dan (the one and only living 10th Dan was Koichi Tohei Sensei when he was still a member and Head Instructor of Aikikai Hombu Dojo).
Rank inflation is not as bad in aikido than it is in some other martial arts.
Geis states that he is a 10th Dan in a particular style of Aikido (I don't remember which one).

Dan ranks also have a teaching credential Belt system for Black Belts wishing to pursue a teaching career as listed above they are Renshi (who is ‘a man of high character ‘training master’), Kyoshi (Meaning ‘a teacher’ or ‘teaching master’) and Hanshi (a ‘model for all masters’).
It would be great if all styles had their rank requirements spelled out specifically so you could know exactly where you stand and what is expected of you by comparison to all the other styles however, this is not the case.

The original belt ranks for females: those who hold Dan or Kyu grades in the girl's or women's division, corresponded to those of the boy's and men's division, using respectively the red, red and white, fl, brown or violet (purple) belts, but with a white stripe running lengthwise through the center.

As one is promoted to a higher rank his or her level of performance and moral standard are expected to be at a high level.
Rank in the intermediate phase is based on demonstrating techniques at a more mature level, success in competition, knowledge of the philosophy of Kodokan Judo, knowledge of competition rules, and an introduction to several kata.

After 8th dan there are still two more levels of promotion (although you might argue that they are largely honorary).
The whole kyu/dan system in Aikido (for general use) was less than 20 years old when he died, I think that the evidence seems to imply that the standards shifted and flexed over the years (as is probably normal for a new system).
Now you might argue (with some validity) that this is because Aikido switched over to the kyu/dan system after the war (actually before, but it didn't become widespread until afterwords), but some of the menkyo kaiden at least were issued in the kyu/dan period.
