Dan the Automator: Wanna Buy a Monkey?: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
For the past half-dozen years, the Automator has been the Timbaland/Neptunes correlate for the underground, a knob-twiddling ambassador between the worlds of alternative hip-hop and indie rock.
Part of the problem lies in the musically segregated organization of the album, as the Automator's hip-hop selections are clumped into the front and back, while the indie-friendly picks comprise the creamy center.
The Automator's additions to the members of his all-star team fall under the categories of near-invisible (the vocal sample added to a portion of Tortoise's "Seneca") or distracting (the generic beat and "one, two" vocals clumsily added to Air's ethereal "Le Soleil").

Dan The Automator: I thought it turned out ok. These kinda projects, I have mixed feelings about them because I think the originals are what they are and they stand alone.

Dan The Automator: Wanna Buy a Monkey? (2002): Reviews
Producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, a founder and member of acts such as the Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Deltron 3030 and Lovage, here offers his first mix album.
What this strange cast of characters eventually creates is a groovy mish-mash of up/down tempo breaks, hip-pop sound collages and the odd bout of guitar-driven frenzy that, while nearly impossibly to dance to, manages to expose most other DJs as the talentless, not to mention painfully derivative crate-raiders they truly are.
Automator has described Monkey as an opportunity for listeners to journey inside his mind, but given his past discography, that trip should be a lot wilder and weirder than this relatively straightforward record.

Dan "The Automator" Nakamura is a San Francisco-based hip-hop producer whose work with "Kool" Keith Thornton on the latter's Dr.
Not Nakamura's freshman effort by a long shot, the two had actually worked together (with Thornton appearing as Sinister 6000) on Nakamura's debut Automator release, the Better Tomorrow EP, appearing on SF's Ubiquity label in early 1996.

But the clear winner here is Black Rob's "Smoothness." Produced by Dan the Automator, the much-slept-on Bad Boy alumni's flow is reminiscent of Big Daddy Kane at his peak--so tightly focused, so all-out smooth it'll have you begging for more.
Dan the Autmoator is, no question, one of the most gifted and iconoclastic producers in hip-hop, and is largely responsible for the indie scene's growth, being behind projects like Dr. Octagon and Deltron 3030 that no indie kid could possibly resist.
It's an impressive display of the wide variety of styles of the Automator (he produced most of the songs that appear) but generally, they lack the charm, camp, and otherworldliness that is a trademark of his style.

 * Dusted Reviews - Dan The Automator *
Nakamura thought that it was his responsibility to put together this offering of 16 tracks, which he refers to as "A Mixtape Session," so as to point all of us in the correct musical direction.
What Dan attempts to do on Monkey is put together a compelling mix of music that wouldn’t otherwise be listened to in the same sequence - that is, to originally arrange several prereleased tunes that would at the very least stir up curiosity of the artists mixed.
Sure, there are some great tracks on Monkey, its just that Dan didn’t have the stones here to expose us to tracks that we may have missed...the ones where we would have thought to ourselves, ‘Damn, that song ripps,’ and then run and pass off the discovery as our own to our closest friends.

Dan "The Automator" Nakamura is the man we can hold at least partly responsible for Kool Keith's transformation from pink cape wearing hardcore hip-hop hero to the alligator/walrus loving loon on the Dr. Octagon album.
The Automator also had a hand in one of 2001's biggest pop sensations, as producer behind the Gorillaz album and it is this venture which has earned him his most recognition to date.
Heads were lapping it up and it seemed hardly anytime at all before The Automator was throwing on his spoken word outro and waving goodbye.

'A Much Better Tomorrow [VINYL]' by Dan the Automator from The Portsmouth Chorus.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In less talented hands, this stuff would be mush, but Automator pulls it off (though it is tough to imagine an MC patient enough to rhyme over some of the more languid tracks here).
The title track has appeared elsewhere (and features the inspired wackiness of Kool Keith, here as his Sinister 6000 alter ego), but the instrumental tracks are what point the listener to Nakamura's better tomorrow: a world in which hip-hop is free to expand on the myriad sonic possibilities he touches on.
It must be hard for Automator, because the hip-hop world actually expects his work to be off-key and groundbreaking.

Dan “the Automator" Nakamura belatedly brings this sequel record out to his Better Tomorrow EP (the liner notes say one this was recorded in 1996, at the same time he produced the Dr. Octagon cd.), after becoming one of the more sought after producers in the world.
The Automator’s solo album is chock full of interesting songs, proof that hip-hop is more than just rhyming about how endowed you are.
My favorite cuts on this album were the ones that Keith was on (six out of eleven), but the Buck Buck song is fantastic, with Poet taking the song to that other level.

Dan "The Automator" Nakamura isn't just a producer, he is high productivity incarnate.
By far, the most genre (and mind)-bending cuts on the Automator's solo record will be the songs that will pair artists together based on their names — like LeAnn Rimes and Busta Rhymes.
As for the other projects the Automator completed in 2002, namely the records with Beck and the Gorillaz, he expects that those, too, will soon have their day.

Dan "The Automator" Nakamura is a San Francisco-based hip-hop producer whose work with "Kool" Keith Thornton on the latter's Dr. Octagon project shot him to unlikely acclaim in 1996.
With a series of ever more elaborate conceptual projects since then, Nakamura's wildly imaginative productions and offbeat sense of humor made him one of the leading figures in the underground renaissance of alternative rap in the late '90s.
Nakamura's studio, the Glue Factory, also served as the workshop for recordings by Mo'Wax's DJ Shadow and for various artists on the latter's Solesides label (most notably on Latyrx's The Debut).

It's been around a decade since he last mixed a compilation, so there is bound to be a buzz around this tasty little collection.
After introducing the LP with a suitably headz-ish electronica intro, Dan takes us headfirst into the action, with one of Brand Nubian's strongest tracks for a long time, the funkin' 'Rockin' It'.
As mixes go, it's not the most frantic or even the most technically dope, but it's Automator solid and will appeal to all those hip hop heads who like to reach beyond the pale.
