  Danaus information - Search.com
Danaus, or Danaos ("sleeper") was a Greek mythological character, twin brother of Aegyptus and son of Belus, a mythical king of Egypt.
The myth of Danaus is a foundation legend (or re-foundation legend) of Argos, one of the foremost Mycenaean cities of the Peloponnesus.
The descendants of Danaus' "blameless" daughter Hypermnestra, through Danae, led to Perseus, founder of Mycenae, thus suggesting that Argos had a claim to be the metropolis, or "mother city" of Mycenae.

In this system, each species is given genus and species names usually derived from Latin or Greek.
The scientific name for humans is Homo sapiens, the honeybee is Apis mellifera, and the monarch butterfly is Danaus plexippus.
Genus and species names may sometimes seem unnecessarily complicated, but the use of scientific names is worthwhile for several reasons.

A species is a biological group of morphologically similar organisms that share the same gene pool (in other words, they can and do interbreed).
Notice that the family name always ends with -idae, and the genus and species are always italicized or underlined.

IngentaConnect A classification of Danaus butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)...
Classification of the cosmopolitan butterfly genus Danaus (Nymphalidae: Danainae) is revised at subgeneric, specific and subspecific levels, combining for the first time mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence information with morphological data.
Tree topologies based on the nuclear genome (allozymes, pheromone components, the morphology of all life history stages and nuclear DNA sequences), on the one hand, and mitochondrial DNA, on the other, are incongruent and challenge the current taxonomy of the genus.

 Monarch Butterfly
The most recent reclassification of the genus Danainae, also known as the milkweed butterflies, was in 1984 (Ackery and Vane-Wright).
Both the tribes and their subdivisions are South American species, but are very closely related to the North American genera, Danaus Danaus plexippus (Kitching et al.) This is the species which migrates annually through North America into its wintering grounds in Mexico (Urquhart 1988).
This evidence supports the theory that the genus Danainae evolved in Central America and the northern part of South America, and is endemic to those areas (Ackery and Vane-Wright 1984).

So the Monarch butterfly is known as Danaus plexipus and it is in the Danaus genus.
