Dance of Death (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dance of Death is Iron Maiden's 13th studio album, released on September 8, 2003.
During "Dance of Death" Bruce Dickinson would wear theatrical masks and a cape while moving around the stage.
Cover art for the album was provided by David Patchett, but he asked to be removed from the credits because he was not satisfied with the result.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Dance Of Death
So concentrated on my quest was I, that I blatantly refused to hear the pirated version of the album that some of my friends had managed to get their hands on a few days before it was released.
Arguably, the album's best, and one of the band's greatest epics is "Paschendale," an eight-minute gargantuan recounting one of the bloodiest battles that took place in WWI.
Overall, Dance Of Death cannot really be placed up at the zenith of Iron Maiden albums, like Piece Of Mind, Somewhere In Time, and Live After Death, though it is definitely not at the bottom either.

Fortunately, with the release of "Dance Of Death" we could make sure that neither the single nor the cover is really represetative of the album's character.
There are also quite many orchestral elements on the album, plus Iron Maiden recorded a fully acoustic song ("Journeyman") - something we don't often hear on the band's releases (the last time they did something similar was "Prodigal Son"on their second album "Killers").
I would describe the atmosphere and the sound of "Dance Of Death" as a combination of "Piece Of Mind" and "The X-Factor." The production and the mix are more guitar-oriented than on many other albums.

This album is not another Piece of Mind, I do think it is my favorite since Powerslave though, being a similar caliber but much more thorough effort than Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.
But Dance of Death is definitely a better record than No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark (notwithstanding the now-classic title track) combined.
And I firmly believe that this new album is, overall (apart from the abysmal cover art), of the outstanding quality I am generally accustomed to receiving from this band.

The moody acoustic to finish the album is something wev'e never heard before, it was originally supposed to be electric, but during recordings they picked up theior acoustic guitars and it sounded so good they decided on the finished version we have on the album.
Then after waiting three years (lean of good metal) for their next studio album my expectations of Dance Of Death were high, however I must say that this album has not met my expectations.
The first album of Maiden after Seventh son of a seventh son that covers all the desires of group fans having epic, straight rock songs.

Iron Maiden: Dance of Death - PopMatters Music Review
Dance of Death is Iron Maiden's 13th album, and it picks up immediately where the band left off on Brave New World -- which means, basically, more of what fans have come to expect from the band.
Their trademark style of epic song lengths, orchestral riffs, powerful vocal melodies, and galloping rhythms is far from the coolest thing in contemporary music these days, but it's a tried-and-true formula that still works, and as bassist/primary songwriter/fearless leader Steve Harris knows all too well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If Dance of Death ended right as "Paschendale" concluded, it would have been a very good album, but instead, it goes on for another 20 minutes, and by the time you get to the final track, you're basically tired after so many lengthy songs.

Dance Of Death is a far cry from the 1990s Maiden-in-the-dumps sludge with excessive bass, poor vocals and some pop-schlock thrown in for sales.
Dance Of Death is a perfect blend of old and new.
Dance Of Death is better than Brave New World, and the best thing they’ve done since Seventh Son — which is high praise indeed.

Dance Of Death for me, is by far the best Maiden album since Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, and it confuses me to no end how other people who have written reviews here can say otherwise, have you not listened to it properly?!.
The reason i haven't given the album 5 stars is because there are a few moment on it which make you think 'why did they do that?' such as there only being 1 verse in Rainmaker, but having the chorus repeated 3 times in a row after that.

Before the release of "Dance of Death", their latest, there was a fair bit of hullaballoo with regard to the cover art.
This is one of the worst tracks on the album, and unfortunately the one that most persistently lodges itself between your ears.
The album is wrapped up by "Age of Innocence" (sounding very familiar, by another band somewhere) and the repetitive-chorus, pretty cheesy "Journeyman".

I think Dance of Death is among one of their best, I liked it alot.
Absolutely outstanding, this album sets the trend in which all other budding metal bands should follow, the tripple axe guitar work is superb, just listen to the riffs on tracks such as 'New Frontier' and 'Rainmaker' the lyircs are as powerful and in depth as ever, Bruce's vocals are seasoned to perfection.

Bob's Reviews: CDs: Hard Rock/Heavy Metal: Dance of Death
Pulling influence from their most recent albums, the stylings of former lead vocalist Blaze Bayley, and Bruce Dickinson's successful solo career, Dance of Death is an eclectic mix of reminisces, shades and emotives of the band's past, and forays into the future of metal.
Beside the heightened complexity and advanced technical merit of the album Dance of Death is a showcase of the best vocal work to ever come out of the "Air Raid Siren" Bruce Dickinson.
Much as the musical style of the album is all over the place even within single songs so is Bruce's vocal stylings as it matches moods, works in contrast to the scoring, and just generally pushes the envelope.

Released in 2003, "Dance of Death" is Iron Maiden's second studio album recorded as a six-piece and featuring the mighty, three-pronged guitar attack of Janick Gers, Dave Murray and Adrian Smith.
While retaining Maiden’s signature rumbling, galloping bass lines and fast, furious riffing, the sound is distinctly mellower and more melodic; the influence of the historic prog bands beloved of both Steve Harris and Bruce Dickinson is also clearly in evidence, especially in the longer tracks, with their complex, string- and keyboard-laden arrangements.
Even though not always fully appreciated by Iron Maiden’s loyal following, “Dance of Death” is a well-crafted, skilfully performed album by a band at the top of their game.

Iron Maiden - Dance Of Death : album review
With 13 studio albums and countless live and special edition releases to their name, Iron Maiden epitomsze the dictionary definition of "legends".
If you were ever into the band as a youngster, you will remember the shock and horror that Iron Maiden brought to many British homes in the '80s, through their artwork, song titles (the most amusing being the number one single, Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter) and a strange zombie-like mascot named Eddie.
In the cold light of day however, the majority of the album is over the top, the songs are ridiculously long, the lyrics are laughable and Bruce's high-pitched wails are as irritating as ever.

The cover is bowling shoe-ugly, but Dance of Death will not dissappoint hard-core Maiden fans, as there is little variation from their successful formula.
Throughout the album's 11 tracks I kept running into recycled bits and pieces of songs that Maiden have done before, in particular, the intro to "No More Lies" sounds an awful lot like the Clansman, and Face in the Sand's intro sounds a lot like "Blood Brothers".
Dance of Death will not be remembered, so hence I rate it as an average yet disappointing release from a band capable of much more.

I approached this album with caution and admittedly at first listen wasn't entirely grasped by the whole Iron Maiden in 2003 concept, but now, after it has played through several times, I find it difficult to let go of.
The album opens with 'Wildest Dreams', their new single (not that a single means much in an album band like Maiden) and the track they were showcasing in their shows all over Europe.
The title track 'Dance of Death' is a prime example of their famed classical guitar introductions that moves into Maiden at their finest bringing with it a questionable string section.

is a good album, the passion and intensity displayed by Iron Maiden on their early releases seemed lacking here.
Throughout the album it's apparent that his focus, and really that of every member of the band, is once again on creating heartfelt and memorable metal that defies what the "industry" considers commercially viable.
That being said, I feel that this song is the weakest on the album due mostly to the unimaginative and too-repeated chorus.

All of which means that 'Dance Of Death' marks the point where the pressure on Steve Harris and co to deliver a blinder has increased tenfold.
The tension between Dickinson and Harris was crackling once again, and the edge that Adrian Smith brings to the band's songwriting made the band's 12th album an enormously satisfying experience for die-hards and newbie fans alike.
Put simply, 'Dance Of Death' is Iron Maiden's best album since 1988's 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son'.Heavier and darker than 'Brave New World' and with none of that albums long winded-rambling,this is as passionate and fired-up as the band have EVER sounded.
