Lungfish: Feral Hymns: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
All the familiar elements-- the deliberate, stately percussion; the elongated, cyclical riffs; the snarled lyrical tautologies and abstruse involutions-- are all intact.
Lungfish is about as far from dancepunk as you can get, yet the core structure of dance music is a good comparison for understanding how they arrive at their sui generis style.
Dancepunk usually appropriates the trappings of dance music-- shuffle beats, robotic bass, crisp tempo-changes and dynamic shifts-- and arrays them in serial, song-oriented structures.

Cokemachineglow.com - Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra: Who Is This America?
Dancepunk can be a hell of a lot of fun.
Drawing on everything from James Brown to Fela Kuti, with plenty of afro-latin soul thrown in, Who is this America is bursting at the seams with creativity and packaged with more polyrhythms than any one album deserves.
It’s worth making clear that this doesn’t really constitute dancepunk, but the strong leftist politics of the music and danceable funk throw it in the same general region.

popular music: futureheads (meantime decent)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
In the music scene today, there may be no band that sounds like it's having more fun than the Futureheads.
Their bouncy dancepunk tunes are catchy, gritty-edged, danceable -- and above all, the guys sound like they're having a absolutely glorious time.
A pal of mine went to a Futureheads concert and confided that the crowd didn't move at all.

Sponic Zine - Music Reviews - Liars   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
It made tangible and meaningful the abstract term “dancepunk.” Hell, it probably legitimized the genre.
And whether or not Liars want to be associated with dancepunk is irrelevant; like trying to divorce Bob Pollard from lo-fi, or Pavement from slacker rock.
Either as a violent reaction to that pigeonholing or as an admirably-conceived artistic departure, Liar’s new album They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, radically re-imagines the band as an unrepentantly avant-garde noise trio.

But something else happened: all the punkers wanted to do was dance, turning 2002 into the year of early-'80s humping no-wave/dancepunk (music geared towards dancing, but with a punk approach).
With the tightest beats like, ever, the DDM sound as if they've channeled their live dancepunk explosion by culling ideas from modern electronic dance music (drum 'n' bass, electro, breakbeats, techno, even trance), rather than just milking the ole Gang of Four teat.
Matt Howze (ex of Treadwell) is on drums, Kevin Disco (of Radar) is on keybs and vox; as touchstones, you could definitely cite Neu and Suicide--the boys toy with some minimalism, but mostly douse their fire with pulsing, electrified screams, and circuit-breaking melodies and loops.

Dancepunk: This is one of the ones that's completely useless.
Don't get me wrong, there are some great bands out there that are being passed off as dancepunk (Metric, Controller.Controller, early Liars, etc), it's just a really ridiculous genre overall.
Dancepunk, as you define it, is kind of a useless term.

Action Action: Don't Cut Your Fabric to This Year's Fashion - PopMatters Music Review
The salon-cut hair combed forward; one of them is wearing a suit jacket with a t-shirt and jeans; there's a white belt and somebody wearing a tucked in, buttoned-up t-shirt with a pattern so uncool that by wearing it, it becomes cool again.
Yep, that's right, it's a dancepunk band, and unless you've had your head in the sand for the past few years, they're the one of the hottest new trends in indie rock.
Unfortunately for dancepunks across the nation, Action Action's debut release is a party killer.

Treble: Measles Mumps Rubella - Fantastic Success   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The "dancepunk" descriptor no longer seems quite as valid, the next best tag I could come up with being "no-gaze." MMR's melodic duality may not seem quite so apparent at first, as Fantastic Success's opener "Algorithm of Desire" sounds a lot like typical dance punks such as Erase Errata or early Liars.
It's around track three where the dancepunk delusions begin to fade, as the manic, swirling cacophony of "Libra Science" drops any notion of ass shaking in favor of tripped-out space odyssey.
There is, of course, the sonic aspect, but what really separates Measles Mumps Rubella from most familiar dancepunk acts is that they're, frankly, a lot better.

Maybe, this is supposed to serve as a "Dancepunk for Beginners" album.
Its dancepunk, which not a lot of people know exists.
For those people, I suggest checking out bands like Black Eyes (their first album is a bit more dancy than Cough), El Guapo, Le Tigre.

 Portland Mercury - Music - Punk'd
One of the things going on with Mahjongg: they are a rhythm-based punk band in the loosest terms possible, that sounds as though they actually listen to music outside the '70s Anglo dancepunk proles.
This is not to say they don't hurl nasty disco-guitars like A Certain Ratio and Josef K armed w/razorblade frisbees now and again, but that when they do so, it ain't no matter of convention.
And, the main interest they share with the '70s Anglo dancepunk proles: political agenda.

The Rapture - Echoes - Review
The album has been out in Europe for over a year and on file sharing networks that entire time as well.
As one of the groups who is supposed to be leading the whole dancepunk explosion, it comes as a big frustration to me that after all the hype and all the wait, Echoes is pretty much a letdown.
Sure, the group can rock out at moments, but the majority of the 11 tracks on this release just feel warmed-over.

Music Underwater Review: Q And Not U-Power   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
To say that it's Dischord's biggest disappoint this year would be jumping the gun (that honor goes to the Beauty Pill's The Unsustainable Lifestyle, which failed to follow up on an excellent EP and two brilliant albums as Smart Went Crazy) but its not too far off.
"Wonderful People" is the first dancepunk song I've heard that actually crosses the line from punk into straight up disco.
Featuring the bands signature choppy post-punk guitars, a Flaming Lips caliber squelching bass line, and falsetto vocals worthy of the brothers Gib themselves, "Wonderful People" might be the best song of 2004.

Moving Units: Dangerous Dreams - PopMatters Music Review
*More commonly known as dancepunk and/or post-punk, which I simply won't use here; I believe that mecha-funk is, descriptively, more apt.
"Dancepunk" conjures images of Joe Strummer as a zombie in Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video, and that just suggests a faulty association.
Additionally, many readers would object to "dancepunk" serving as a blanket description for all of the bands listed above.

Sports-Den.net - Less sports, More den
It was just two years ago that Liars released their promising debut LP, They Threw us in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top.
You're on Fire Mr." and "Grown Men Don't Fall in the River, Just Like That," with its mantra, "We got our finger on the pulse of America!" showed that Liars had firmly established themselves as one of the most important bands in the up-and-coming "dancepunk" genre.
So what happens, exactly, when their sophmore full-length, They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, shoves virtually all of these so-called dancepunk tendencies to the side, in favour of dark and abrasive instrumentation and a lyrical theme centered around German witch-hunt legends and folklore?

 Are you familiar?: March 2005
Surfacing prior to the (near) popularity of the dancepunk genre, controller.controller is founded on the disparate influences of members Nirmala Basnayake (vocals), Ronnie Morris (bass), Scott Kaija (guitar), Colwyn Llewellyn-Thomas (guitar) and Jeff Scheven (drums).
When prodded about the trendy dancepunk genre pigeonhole – a question I hate asking these bands, but love hearing the answer to – Scott elucidated his thoughts on rock music.
He brought up the fact that rock and roll was, in essence, a form of dance music, and that the purportedly “revolutionary” concept of (gasp) mixing dance and rock which came about a few years ago, is, in fact, nothing new.

In case you aren't familiar with any of these bands, they all fall very loosely under the very vague descriptor "Dancepunk." Don't look at me like that, I didn't come up with it.
Basically it has nothing to do with Punk and isn't usually very good to dance to, but these bands and others combine dancefloor-type beats with groove-based, chunky guitar among other instruments.
This is a good place to begin if you are unfamiliar with any dancepunk stuff.

When they came around in the 90's, alternative music took on a whole different meaning and bands that were nothing like Nirvana, Alice and Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, ect.
Over the years there were so many bands that took so many different directions within that category that they cried for terms that would classify them in their own unique ways such as shoegaze, mathrock, dancepunk, ect.
The dominant "indie" label implies that the music is something free of classification, but i guess it has over time come to mean something along the lines of extra-alternative.

The Chinese Stars: A Rare Sensation: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The slow-in-muck bursts of guitar noise on "The Fastest Horse Yet", the hyper-intelligent rhythm switchups on "Arson Hotline", and the kamikaze fuck-it-all counterbeat on "Loose Traffic" all fit into the genre without bowing before its silly self-conscious rule: It ain't good if you can't dance to it.
The Turbo Mattress EP did have two fairly straightforward dancepunk songs-- "Sick Machine" and "Eyes of the Secret North"-- but given the band's noisy prehistories, even these songs came off as relentless, spit-happy monsters that just happened to be danceable.
These days, it would seem The Chinese Stars are concerned only with being a one-trick dancepunk band.
