In the late 1980s, he began recording his extensive repertoire in the solo format for Dancing Cat Records, the label specializing in slack key recordings which is owned by pianist/guitarist and slack key enthusiast George Winston.
Her relative (and Leonard’s Tradewinds label mate) Ray Kane recorded a version that is very different from Leonard’s, on his 1994 album PUNAHELE (Dancing Cat Records), one more illustration of the great individuality in slack key.
Slack key guitarist George Kuo also recorded it in the G Major Tuning, with Barney Isaacs playing acoustic steel, on their 1995 duet album, HAWAIIAN TOUCH, on Dancing Cat Records (on this recording they made the first ever recordings of pure duets of acoustic steel guitar and slack key guitar).

While he was in town last month for concerts, I caught up with Winston at a recording session with one of my favorite local musicians, Joanie Komatsu.
After appearing on one of the Dancing Cat compilation CDs, "Ki Ho alu Christmas," Joanie is finally working on her own Dancing Cat recording.

Kalakaua's conviction that the revitalization of traditional culture was at the root of the survival of the Hawaiian kingdom became a major factor in the continuity of traditional music and dance, and his influence still shows.
Four of Gabby's earliest recordings from the late 1940s or early 1950s (on Bell Records 78 rpms) are especially impressive: Hi'ilawe (#505); Key Khoalu (#509); Hula Medley (#506); and Wai O Keaniani (#510).
Dancing Cat Records is currently producing albums, mainly solo, by some of the best players.

Over the years she's written numerous songs, recorded with a number of other musicians, and now releases this, her second solo album.
One moment she is sultry and smoky with a jazz-tinged version of the Hawaiian standard Sweet Leilani; the next moment, she is gentle and rolling as she leans a little more into a traditional vocal approach on Kipu, her own song.
It may be a quieter album than many slack key guitar recordings I have heard, but that is not a bad thing.

The Beamer brothers went Hollywood -- literally -- and recorded this florid soft-pop outing with LA producer Tony Randazzo, burying their slack key work under a full-on orchestral MOR treatment for about half the album, with results nearly worthy of David Gates or John Denver.
He's kept at it over the years, and here is one of his most intriguing and endearing albums, a late '80s collaboration with the surving members of the Tau Moe Family, one of the hottest Hawaiian acts of the 1920s and '30s.
Thank goodness for this great album, recorded in the same style that took the Moes overseas and made them huge stars during the golden age of Hawaiian popular music.

 FAME Review: Ozzie Kotanl - To Honor a Queen
In high school, after hearing Keola Beamer's landmark album Hawaiian Slack Key In The Real Old Style, Ozzie was inspired to take up the guitar, and by 1976, he was a student of slack key master, Sonny Chillingworth.
In 1986, Ozzie took over the slack key program at the University of Hawaii and began developing teaching materials and original compositions, which were showcased on his landmark 1988 album, "Classical Slack." The album brought him to the attention of George Winston, who asked Ozzie to record for his Dancing Cat label.
For those interested in the technical aspects of the guitar playing, the majority of the songs were recorded using the "Taro Patch" tuning (D-G-D-G-B-D), although tuned down to F# on two of the songs.
