While all three commercial networks had "chinks in their armour" in this year's ratings battle, Seven had been able to turn to a new series of Dancing with the Stars and the hospital drama Grey's Anatomy — the first and fifth most-watched shows on TV last week.
Last night, Idol was the fourth-most-watched show on Australian TV, with 1.3 million viewers nationally.
Media buyers said Seven was challenging Nine for the No. 1 spot without the influence of its two hit series Desperate Housewives and Lost.
