	Razing the Treasurehouses
		And It is the sense I get from reading Dane Lanken's Montreal Movie Palaces --launched in early December at the Rialto Theatre-- and the look he gets in his eyes when he discusses the unstoppable erosion of Montreal's cinematic history.
		Lanken, a former Montreal Gazette movie critic, was enraged at the planned demolition of the Capitol, arguably the most beautiful theatre on the Island of Montreal.
		When a series of angry Gazette articles by Lanken could do nothing to halt the planned demolition, he and his associate, photographer Brian Merrett, spent two melancholy days in the building recording it for posterity.

		So of course Kate's budding, singer-songwriter kids are here, Martha and Rufus Wainwright (who, by the way, just had his debut album make Spin's Top Twenty for 1998), along with famous papa and ex-hubby Loudon Wainwright III.
		But so is Anna's lesser-known brood, including the husband she met while singing in the '60s with the Mountain City Four, Dane Lanken, and their children Sylvan and lovely-voiced Lily Lanken, who might be the next of the clan to break out.
		Third sister Jane McGarrigle kicks in, too, as she did on KandA's first album, and so does the fourth Mountain City Four, Chaim Tannenbaum, who's also played with Loudon.

		That changed when I saw Montreal Movie Palaces, written in 1993 by Dane Lanken.
		This eye-orgy of photos and text by the husband of one of those McGarrigle singing chicks will make you say a prayer for all the love and care for the once-great movie theatres we’ve mostly lost by now.

		Now I can't help thinking that they missed a trick with this album - surely the majority of the singers (without Chaim) should have recorded O Tannenbaum and dedicated it to Chaim?
