The Dangs, the tribal-dominated south Gujarat district, which recently witnessed communal violence over the issue of conversion, is likely to become an arena of intense political activity in the days ahead.
The study, titled, The True Story of The Dangs, notes that apart from Christian and Hindu religious organisations trying to intensify their activities, political parties are also endeavouring to take advantage of the situation.
It notes that the conversion has generated social tension in the tribal Dangs society since it is mostly the individuals who convert, and not entire families.

Dangs is the smallest of the districts of Gujarat in an absolutely sylvan environment with a forest coverage of more than 90%.
It is interesting to note that the breakup of the population of the Dangs hardly mentions the numbers that practice tribal religions (animism), maintaining that just 219 persons did not state their religion.

A drive through the Dangs forests in south Gujarat exposes a series of stumps that stand testimony to the unabated felling of trees, posing a serious threat to the green cover.
The Dangs has more than 500 species of flora, including about 300 species of medicinal plants, many of these like ``Safed Musli'', the base medicine for various Ayurvedic formulations, being peculiar to the hot and humid climate of the region.
Though the incidents of forest fire have declined considerably in the Dangs, the level of cooperation from the locals is far from satisfactory.

Morari Bapu, a popular religious preacher, invited to Dangs in 2002, is said to have mooted the idea of the new Kumbh at the Dangs, at the `precise' spot where Ram and Lakshman met Shabri and ate the berries given by her.
Dangs Collector RM Jadhav confirmed to Mahesh Langa of Tehalka of the administration's involvement: `We are providing infrastructure support like electicity, check-dams etc. for the Kumbh.' When asked whether Dangs needed a Kumbh, Jadhav parried it, saying, `It's a religious issue.

 The Hindu : VHP pamphleteering worries Christians in Dangs
There is apprehension among Christians in the tribal-dominated Dangs district in south Gujarat over a "Ram katha" discourse organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad-supported Shree Sabrimata Seva Samiti at Subir village, near the district headquarter of Ahwa.
The pamphlets released by the Seva Samiti claim that Subir village is the spot where Shabri waited for Lord Rama as it believed that Dangs was the original "Dandakaranya" of the Ramayana age.
Justifying the apprehension among the Christians is the reported threat to the Christians by a Minister in the Narendra Modi Cabinet, Karsan Patel, who is in charge of the Dangs district and one of the chief organisers of the Ram katha.

Four former tribal kings in the Dangs district submitted a memorandum to the district collector opposing the demand of Purnima Pakwasa, Gandhian social activist and freedom fighter, who is on a hunger strike in Saputara since last Monday.
In a memorandum submitted to district collector, four former tribal rulers of the Dangs area, Dhanrajsingh Chandrasingh of Vasurna, Trikaramrao Sahebrao of Pimpri, Karansingh Yashwantrao of Gadhvi and Santaram Bakul of Vasurna said that the land which Purnima Pakwasa claims actually belongs to the tribals.
The memorandum, a copy of which is with the UNI, says that the entire land of the Dangs district actually belonged to the Adivasis, which was later handed over to government for development activities.

Hindu materials already being circulated in the Dangs speak of the “reconversion” of adivasis to Hinduism, a religion that is foreign to most adivasis, as they traditionally are animists.
