Danger Islands - Solomon Islands - Brief Article Ecologist, The - Find Articles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Thousands of families have had to flee their homes to avoid the increasingly bitter clashes between men from Guadalcanal, the island province where the capital, Honiara, is sited, and Malaitans who came to work on oil palm plantations near the airport, made homes in Honiara and seemed to take over the country's top jobs.
The irony is that the Solomon Islands is a nation of villages.
The government is constitutionally illegal, the police demoralised, schools shut and the 40 foreign peacekeepers from Australia and New Zealand are powerless to stem the chaos.

Pukapuka - Northern Group - Cook Islands
The island is extremely important in the arena of Pacific cultural history both because of its geographical location and because its culture has close affiliations with both Eastern and Western Polynesia.
By a strange coincidence the first Pacific island sighted by Europeans was another Pukapuka, this one in the north-eastern corner of the Tuamotu archipelago, discovered by Ferdinand Magellan on January 24 1521.
He could not land because of high surf and dangerous rocks and, such was the paucity of his imagination, named Pukapuka the Island of Danger.

Swains Island lies 663 nautical miles south of the equator, 100 miles south of Fakaofu (now Fakaofo), 170 miles north and a little east of Apia, Samoa, 200 miles north and a little west of Pago Pago, and 310 miles west of Pukapuka (Danger Islands).
The island is a ring of sand and coral, a mile and a half east and west, a mile wide, and nowhere more than 20 feet high, surrounding a shallow lagoon, which is only slightly brackish, with no surface connection with the sea.
Most of the land, from the crest of the narrow ocean beach to the very edge of the lagoon, is thickly covered with vegetation, about 800 acres of coconut palms and various trees and shrubs found widespread in the Pacific.

Australian police and military personnel in the Solomon Islands would be in more danger when a gun amnesty expired later this month, the Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, warned yesterday.

Mr Downer told Channel Ten: "I would imagine that there will still be some number [of weapons] out there, and that will be the difficult part, when the operation has to go after the weapons that are still out there in the community.

Planet Ark : FEATURE - Galapagos - "enchanted" land that time forgot
Undiscovered by man until the 16th century, the remote Pacific islands some 600 miles (965 km) off the Ecuadorian mainland are home to some of the world's rarest species, including the flightless cormorant and the marine iguana, the world's only seagoing lizard.
Now, less than two centuries after Darwin explored the exotic islands he called "enchanted," a near-disastrous oil spill has proved a cautionary tale for experts who fear the unique ecosystem he documented is in peril from man, the very animal it eluded for so long.
Nature came to the rescue of the island cluster when the oil tanker Jessica ran aground in San Cristobal island's prophetically named Shipwreck Bay in mid-January, spewing most of its 240,000 gallon fuel cargo into the crystalline waters.
