  'Dangerous Liaisons'
Dangerous Liaisons," based on the 1782 Choderlos de Laclos novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," is tantalizingly wicked -- watching it makes the color rise to your cheeks.
Set just prior to the French Revolution, "Dangerous Liaisons" is about sex as gamesmanship, and its spirit is keyed to Close's nakedly malevolent smile.
Dangerous Liaisons, at area theaters, is rated R and contains some nudity and adult situations.

 Dangerous Liaisons - Valmont omni
Because the story of Les Liaisons Dangereuses unfolds entirely via letters written among the characters with no omniscient author intervention, the novel offers great subjectivity of interpretation -- not only about who should be considered the protagonists and who the villains, but about the significance of events and even, in some cases, what actually happened.
Cruel Intentions, set in the late 1990s when it was also produced, more closely parallels Dangerous Liaisons than the source novel, though its young characters look to be the ages of the stars of Valmont and of Laclos' youthful aristocrats rather than the mature adults of Frears' film.
Not quite the bitch that Glenn Close creates in Dangerous Liaisons, the resentments of Gellar's Merteuil stem from absent parents, boys who reject her eager sexuality in favor of naïve bimbos, and the need to maintain a façade of propriety and purity to get good grades and hold an office at school.

 DANGEROUS LIAISONS
Dangerous Liaisons began as the novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, by French author Choderlos de Laclos.
It was while he was assigned to a boring duty on a Bay of Biscay island at age forty that he determined, as he wrote to a friend, to use the time to create something "out of the ordinary, eye-catching, something that would resound around the world" and live after de Laclos’; death.
His Les Liaisons Dangereuses was first produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Other Place in Stratford on Avon, 1985, transferring to London in 1986 and New York in 1987.

At first glance, DANGEROUS LIAISONS appears to be an extravagant eighteenth-century period-piece, which it is; the powdered wigs and overflowing corsets typical of the genre are all here, and the cinematography is appropriately glossy.
Dangerous Liaisons has a contemporary resonance with its sharp-edged portrait of the battle of the sexes, its depiction of how boredom can corrupt, and its view of amorality as a destructive force in human relationships.

Considering that 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' by Choderlos de Laclos is perhaps my favorite novel (or tied, at least, with 'The Island of the Day Before' by Umberto Eco), I would probably be expected to rate Dangerous Liaisons with a nine, at least, yet I could not do so in good conscience.
Although Dangerous Liaisons fails to live up to the novel of its origin in most respects, the scenery and costumes were beautifully designed.
Since Les Liaisons Dangereuses was an epistolary novel, giving de Laclos no reason to go into detail about clothing and furniture, the artists had a fair amount of liberty, and they did spectacular work with it.

Screenwriter Hampton adapts his play perfectly well (his play, in turn, adapted from the 19th-century French novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses"), to create an Eris-meets-Eros fantasy (with a deliciously cynical ending) where the 20th-century viewer delights -- safely -- in the manipulation of fancy-dress people in a century long, long ago.
