The Unofficial Dream Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The son of Hector and Lyta Hall, Daniel was born in the Dreaming, becoming master of the realm on the death of Morpheus.
Although Daniel was now Dream and aware of all of his predecessors doings as they were now his own, he was at the same time a different entity than Morpheus, a name that the new Lord of Dreams do not accept as his own.
Certain aspects of Daniels personality had been made part of this new incarnation and whereas Morpheus had hair and had always been seen wearing dark clothing, the new Dream had white hair and was cloaked in white.

Sandman (DC Comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sandman is the name of six fictional characters in the DC Comics universe.
The Sandman is also a comic book printed by DC Comics under the Vertigo imprint in the 1980s and 1990s, also starring a character known as the Sandman (who is later replaced by another who carries the name), but not the same as in the original series.
The Sandman was originally intended to be the actual Sandman of popular myth, "eternal and immortal", despite his superhero-like appearance and adventures.

(in the womb) The Sandman #11; (born) The Sandman #22.
Daniel was named in accordance with Neil Gaiman's decision to give the Endless names or titles beginning with the letter 'D', and after the Biblical prophet who interpreted dreams.
Daniel has made guest appearances in two issues of the JLA (#22 and #23), in which he helped prevent the Earth from being taken over by 'The Conqueror', a giant starfish, and in which he repaid the 'debt' his predecessor had owed the Justice League for help in finding his ruby.

Monitor Duty: ALAN KISTLER'S SANDMAN GUIDE
SANDMAN NUMBER FIVE and SIX - While not technically called "Sandman" usually, that is WHAT he is rather than WHO he is. This character was Dream of the Endless, the Lord of Dreams, the King of Stories, Lord Shaper, or, as he was most often called, Morpheus.
Although, as I said, very few people actually called him Morpheus "the Sandman", he is no doubt the most famous character of that name due to the critical acclaim and success of his series.
Daniel made an appearance in a JLA story by Grant Morrison and has made a few veiled cameos in the recent JSA series.

Daniel, the newest incarnation of Dream of the Endless, comes to the JLA and brings several members of it into a dreamscape in order to fight it, a monster that really just looks and acts like the Silver Age Starro.
But, the real question of, Can Grant actually WRITE the character of SANDMAN is more of a 'nice try, sorry.' While there are great moments, like Daniel saying he and Wonder Woman are almost related (it's a mythological thing, we wouldn't understand), most of Dream's dialog feels leaden.
Daniel was really only introduced to SANDMAN readers in THE WAKE.

 Sandman (comic character)
The Sandman is a comic book character created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Bert Christman[?] in 1939 for World's Fair Comics, published by the comic book company now known as DC Comics; thereafter he appeared in Adventure Comics from issues #40 to #102.
Wesley Dodds was one of the earliest superheroes (then called "Mystery Men" for lack of a better term), though his status as such is debatable as he came rather from the detective tradition seen in the pulps of the 1930s.
This Sandman was originally intended to be the actual Sandman of popular myth, "eternal and immortal," although in a later retcon by Roy Thomas[?], he was "revealed" to be Dr. Garrett Sanford, a UCLA psychology professor who became trapped in the Dream Dimension.

When Morpheus, the true Sandman and master of the Dreaming, returned home after having been imprisoned on Earth for the better part of a century, he casually dismissed Hec as a ghost and sent him "to the place appointed for you." While no previous Sandman story arc seemed like a continuation of a preceding one, The Kindly Ones is a meta-sequel of sorts that features characters and plot threads from Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll's House, Season of Mists, A Game of You and Brief Lives.
Daniel is the child of Lyta and the late Hector Hall, who as The Fury and The Silver Scarab, respectively, were part of the superhero team Infinity Inc. In a series of events too complicated to recount here (see The Doll's House), the Halls were swept-up into the Dream World for most of Lyta's pregnancy.
The Climax of the Sandman series, which is wrapped up in the follow-up collection "The Wake", "The Kindly Ones" ties together almost all of the strands from Gaiman's masterpiece story of the Lord of Dream.
