Daniel Nicolas Chodowiecki - LoveToKnow 1911
DANIEL NICOLAS CHODOWIECKI (1726-1801), German painter and engraver of Polish descent, was born at Danzig.
Left an orphan at an early age, he devoted himself to the practice of miniature painting, the elements of which his father had taught him, as a means of support for himself and his mother.
After designing and engraving several subjects from the story of the Seven Years' War, Chodowiecki produced the famous "History of the Life of Jesus Christ," a set of admirably painted miniatures, which made him at once so popular that he laid aside all occupations save those of painting and engraving.

Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki was born on the 10 October 1720 in Gdańsk into a bourgeois family, the son of ‘a Polish Calvinist and a French Huguenot’.
Chodowiecki was more interested in and intrigued by the people of Gdansk, people walking through the old narrow city streets, meeting at receptions, in gardens and praying in churches, than in the city’s majestic structures, tall tenement buildings and sophisticated architecture.
Chodowiecki’s favourite subjects in his ‘Diary of a voyage from Berlin to Gdansk in 1773’ were members of the affluent middle class on show in enclosed locations: huddled in small groups, engrossed in talks, with one of the figures usually portrayed in greater detail.

Descriptions of the names Daniel and Richard
Daniel Dan, Hebrew for 'judge', and name of one of the Tribes of Israel, is sometimes used by itself as a personal name; but even when the bearer is commonly known as Dan, this is generally the short form of Daniel, 'God is Judge'.
Daniel the prophet, according to the book of the Old Testament that goes under his name, was cast into a den of lions for refusing to deny his faith, but emerged unharmed, later to interpret the mysterious letters of fire in Belshazzar's banquetting-hall that announced the doom of Babylon.
The Irish have taken Daniel as a substitute for their native Domhnall, 'world ruler' (see Donald). In Wales the name absorbed the native Deiniol, 'attractive' or 'charming', and is still much used.Danny is usual short form.
