Palmer wrote that Lillard was so deaf that "he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch." Palmer chatted with the janitor, examined him, found a vertebra out of whack, racked it into position and the man's deafness disappeared.
Palmer came to believe that a force, which he called Innate Intelligence, or just Innate, flowed through the spine and what he called sympathetic nerves.
According to Palmer, human disease was the result of interference with the flow of Innate intelligence caused by subluxations, or misalignments of vertebra.

Fundamental to David Palmer's philosophy of health is the idea that all living beings are endowed with what he termed “innate intelligence”.
Palmer believed that this intelligence regulated all the vital functions of the body as it flows through the central nervous system.
Because of this belief, Palmer felt that the primary task of the chiropractor was not to treat conditions, but to remove nerve interference caused by subluxations so that the innate intelligence could carry out its role of maintaining the body's health and equilibrium without obstruction.

Palmer examined him and found a vertebra that was apparently displaced.
Palmer began to explore his new discovery which he named chiropractic - a combination of the Greek words cheir and praktikis, meaning "done by hand." His son B.J. went on to develop the theory and art of chiropractic and laid the groundwork for contemporary practice.
Although the act of replacing vertebrae into their proper position had been practiced for thousands of years, Palmer was the first to articulate the connection between the interference these misaligned bones caused to the nerve system and interference to the functioning of the body.
