Daniel “Dan” Gene Thorberg, Daniel “Dan” Gene Thorberg, who was a former Proctor resident graduating from Proctor High School in 1972, died Tues., July 26, 2005, in his Maple Grove, Minn. home.
Daniel was born in Duluth on Nov. 6, 1953 to Gilbert and Carol (Carlson) Thorberg.
Surviving are a sister Patricia (Dennis) Nettleton and a brother Kenneth, both of Duluth, nieces and nephews Melisa (Richard) Lanthier and their children Paige and Blake of Duluth, Grant (Elizabeth) and their son Vaughn of Proctor, and Wes Nettleton of Blaine.

Earlier this month, the city of Duluth withdrew its request for funds to demolish the St. Louis County Jail from the county's capital improvements budget.
The classical revival jail in Duluth is part of a four-building Civic Center he designed, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In November, the National Trust sent a team to Duluth to conduct a study of the city as part of its Preservation Development Initiatives, a program sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

 Memoir on the Sioux Country, 1678-1682 - Wisconsin Historical Society
The explorer Duluth describes the Upper Mississippi about 1680.
In 1678, Duluth came to the Great Lakes to explore the rich fur-bearing regions north and west of Lake Superior and treat with the Sioux and Ojibwe, ensuring that their furs would flow to the French at Lake Superior rather than to the English at Hudson Bay.
In June of 1680 he rescued the Recollect priest Louis Hennepin before returning to the settlements on the St. Lawrence.
