 Daniel Fuchs Criticism
What strikes one first of all about Daniel Fuchs's novels and stories, especially if they're compared to the work of other "Jewish American" writers, is that Fuchs has no designs on his readers.
In the writing of fiction, talent came almost as easily to Daniel Fuchs as to Willie Mays in the hitting of baseballs.
Fuchs seems to appear as himself, or an only thinly disguised character, in all these s...

Daniel Fuchs Biography | Dictionary of Literary Biography
Daniel Fuchs was born in New York City.
Fuchs portrays the immigrant and second-generation Jews struggling in deterministic environments of severe financial constraint and emotional bankruptcy.
The dialogue is the most vital and rhythmic that Fuchs has produced and, though none of his work is laden with the cultural detail of Jewish life, these Jews at least have a distinctly ethnic voice.

JBooks.com - Fiction: Hollywood and Flatbush
The 28-year-old man was Daniel Fuchs, the son of Jewish immigrants and a person whose Brooklyn trilogy was a study in tenement realism.
Perhaps Fuchs should have returned to the Brooklyn of his childhood, but there were simply too many things that kept him in Hollywood: the relentless sunshine, the palm trees, and the steady, if less than lavish, money.
Fuchs, the Jewish-American novelist of the tenements, had to wait until the mid-l960s when the excitement generated by a newly emerging Jewish ethnicity would bring his novels back into print.

 Saul Bellow's World
Fuchs is indefatigable without writing like one of those biographers whose energy goes entirely into facts and leaves nothing over for style.
Fuchs describes these others as writers who ''make style the subject of their books, subordinating personality to form, character to artifact, event to irony and action to words.'' Like Dostoyevsky, he says, Saul Bellow is ''a romantic in the world of thought,'' one who believes in ''the lyricism of ideas.'' As Mr.
Fuchs is admiring, as he ought to be, he is not uncritically partial in the manner of some biographers who sound as if the sheer weight of their material had overawed their powers of discrimination.

Daniel Fuchs' 'The Brooklyn Novels' - BOOK REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Fuchs' Brooklyn novels could as easily be labeled Yiddishkeit (for their chronicle of first-generation immigrant Jewish life in New York and environs) as proletarian for their anti-capitalist undercurrents and focus on working-class, tenement-bound lives.
This negation of joy is common to virtually all of Fuchs' characters, who blame their surroundings, but it's also the engine that drives these books, beginning with "Summer in Williamsburg," to heights that are sometimes madcap and often elegiac.
The grace notes of humor that suffuse the novels and exude from the psyches of occasional characters are palliative, for Fuchs' narrative eye is otherwise trained on bleak circumstances in which people regularly lose their moorings.

Novelist Daniel Fuchs shows doubt, mercy and awe for the mysterious process of screenwriting
Regrettably because, at least in his stories and diaristic vignettes, Fuchs had all the makings of a fine critic: doubt, mercy and a healthy awe for that elusive element whose lack can ground an otherwise ideal story, or whose presence elevates an otherwise pedestrian one.
We hear of the "the peace and the kindness" of a desert highway as a traffic tie-up lures motorists out of their cars for a moment's communion, and again of a "kindness" that the narrator looks for and doesn't find in a gaggle of trophy wives.
Maybe it was the age; maybe it was Fuchs himself, whom his New Yorker editor William Maxwell once described as "the most urbane and kindliest man I have ever known." Either way, one doesn't find the word "kindness" used without irony quite so often anymore.
