		Born in New York in 1835, as a young man Daniel Giraud Elliot traveled extensively in Europe and Asia to pursue his interests in ornithology and collect specimens.
		His collection was considered to be the finest private collection of the period and was acquired by the Museum of Natural History in 1869.
		Comprised of fifty of his most compelling images, the Oppenheimer Field Museum Edition of Elliot's Fifty Best accurately conveys the vivid colors and pristine quality present in the originals in the Field Museum's collection from which they were made.

		Daniel Giraud Elliot was born in New York, but later moved to Chicago to serve as Curator of Zoology at the Field Museum.
		Elliot was also able to commission the best bird artist of the day, including Joseph Wolf and Josef Smit, both formally employed by John Gould.
		Elliot was fascinated by the spectacular colors and showy behavior of these birds, and his artist Wolf placed each species in its natural habitat showing the greatest effect the brilliant splendor of its plumage.

		Elliot's have been known to cross with other Syrmaticus species, and the offspring is often fertile.

		The Elliot's Pheasant, Syrmaticus ellioti also known as Bar-backed Pheasant is a large, up to 80cm long, brown and white pheasant with a fl throat, chestnut brown upperparts plumage, white belly, nape and wingbars, red bare facial skin and long rusty-barred whitish tail.
		The female is a rufous brown bird with flish throat, whitish belly and white-tipped tail.
		The Elliot's Pheasant is endemic to China, where it lives in evergreen and mountain forests of southeastern China, at altitudes up to 6,200 feet.
