 Daniel Keys Moran
I've heard about Moran's books for years - so long that it's hard to believe this, his first novel, was published when I was in college, or that he's only about six years older than me. I finally tracked down original copies of each of his novels, and started here, at the beginning.
Its most distinguishing feature is Moran's tendency to poke fun at the characters and events through the narration, and to jump around to widely variable scenes in the space of just a few pages to give a feeling of a gestalt story made of many tiny pieces.
Moran's writing style is one of short, clipped scenes, and jumping from one to another to point a picture of something larger than the concerns of a few protagonists.

Steven Wu's Book Reviews: Long Run, The (Daniel Keys Moran)
Daniel Keys Moran's The Long Run, like his later novel The Last Dancer, is a phenomenally entertaining science-fiction novel that is unjustly out of print today.
Moran isn't expounding on some deep theme, or pushing forward a moral; he's having rip-roaring fun, and he wants us to join in too.
Moran has envisioned a future world in which the United Nations, led by the French, has taken over Earth; rather than being the somewhat ineffectual organization it is today, the United Nations is a powerful military and political force, ruthlessly stamping out the few pockets of rebellion that still exist.

Steven Wu's Book Reviews: Emerald Eyes (Daniel Keys Moran)
I read Daniel Key Moran's Emerald Eyes out of order--a fact that caused it to suffer considerably in comparison to its sequels, the superb The Long Run and the wildly ambitious The Last Dancer.
Moran's writing is not as smooth as it would become by The Long Run; nor is his plotting as fast-paced and seamless.
Moran builds the pressure to an almost intolerable intensity; Carlos's occasional flares of outrage are perfectly understandable against the forces pitted against him.

Long a favorite of the rec.arts.sf.written newsgroup, Daniel Keys Moran is an author who, by all rights, should be more popular than he is. Here is a writer who has an world so thoroughly mapped out that he plans thirty-two books to tell its entire story.
Moran's a modern author, though, and while he writes in a traditional manner, his subject matter and some of his language would have been quite shocking in 1950.
Emerald Eyes is the first volume in Moran's epic vision of a series entitled "The Tales of the Continuing Time," a series that he has been planning and designing since he was thirteen years old (he goes into this in a quite amusing afterword to this volume).

While Moran has already written one or two other books in the series, he is unable to publish them because the publisher who bought them won't print them and he's trying to buy them back.
Moran doesn't think so, and his self-published effort with his sister, "Terminal Freedom", and both are rabidly entertaining works.

Bjorn & Sven's Sci-Fi and Fantasy Book Review
Indeed, Moran implies as much in the way Carl is created - that while he's awfully important, it is his legacy that will become far more significant, notably Trent Castanaveras (see The Long Run, below), and the Gift of the House of November, to be carried through Carl's daughter, Denice.
This is the best of the Moran books, and since it is also the most recent, I find this extremely encouraging.
Although this book does suffer at points from a bit of the "what the heck is going on?!" problem, these are minor and usually just serve to increase the sense of mystery and of a greater story surrounding these books.

Review: Emerald Eyes by Daniel Keys Moran
Woven into the story is a time traveller from the far future, hints at the Time Wars and their impact on the events of the book, and little glimpses of a larger context.
; it's clearly setting the stage for later events in the series, but while a time traveller meddles in a small number of key events, this subplot doesn't have a lot of impact or relevance to the overall story.
I did like the feeling of the story being told from a distant future, though, and the occasional tidbits of foreshadowing tossed in gave the setting a neat bit of depth.
