Beyond his knob-twiddling talents, Lanois is a distinctive performer in his own right -- a master of the pedal-steel guitar, a soundscape virtuoso and a wayward traveler in the vast ambient abyss.
Though Lanois and his soldiers traverse all corners of the musical globe here, there's an underlying despondency that ties everything from "Telco"'s mellifluous, static-scratched ruminations to the brassbound "Agave" together under a common purpose.
Bleak, sandblasted album closer "Todos Santos" is scathing in its minimalism, its lugubrious cadence and yowling guitar forms rivaling even the scornful meditations of the Southern Lord massive -- a sound that's at once expansive and claustrophobic, a series of dreams in panoramic minutiae.
