Topic: Daniel Steibelt

Daniel Steibelt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Very little is known of his artistic life before 1790, when he settled in Paris and attained great popularity as a virtuoso by means of a pianoforte sonata called La Coquette, which he composed for Queen Marie Antoinette; his dramatic opera entitled Romeo et Juliette, produced at the Théâtre Feydeau in 1793, was equally successful.
In the following year Steibelt started on a professional tour in Germany; and, after playing with some success in Hamburg, Dresden, Prague and Berlin, he arrived in May 1800 at Vienna, where he challenged Beethoven to a trial of skill.
Accounts of the contest record it was a disaster for Steibelt, inducing him to quit his tour of Germany and retire to Paris.

A native of Berlin, Daniel Steibelt was one of Europe's most renowned piano virtuosos.
Steibelt was renowned for conjuring up a "storm" on the piano, and this he did to great effect, the "thunder" growling in the bass.
Steibelt, realising he was not only being comprehensively outplayed but humiliated, strode out of the room.

Public Domain Music - Forgotten Rivals of Great Composers - at Web-Helper.net
Grove's Dictionary describes Steibelt as "a musician now almost entirely forgotten, but in his own day so celebrated as a pianoforte player and composer that many regarded him as the rival of Beethoven." He was born in Berlin in 1756.
His wife was an accomplished performer upon the tambourine, and Steibelt wrote pieces with a tambourine accompaniment, which we are told were actually performed in public in London.
Steibelt's life is an excellent illustration of how the public may be deceived by the pretensions of an artificial and insincere composer.

Daniel Steibelt was a renowned German pianist, composer of piano music, and rival of famed piano teacher Ignaz Pleyel in Paris.
In 1799 while in Vienna, he was sufficiently confident of his own abilities at the piano, he challenged Beethoven to a contest of skill, but lost.
After a celebrated career in many European countries, Steibelt settled in Russia in 1809 where he held the position of chapelmaster at the court of Czar Alexander I. Despite this lofty appointment, he was financially destitute at his death -- so much so that a public collection was undertaken to help his family.

"In 1800, the German pianist Daniel Steibelt challenged Beethoven to a piano-playing contest.
Steibelt's improvisation was impressive, but when it was Beethoven's turn, the latter took some music written by his opponent, placed the sheet upside-down, picking out bars here and there, transformed a minor work into a lengthy masterpiece.
Stunned, Steibelt left the room - and Vienna.

Steibelt, a prominent piano virtuoso by 1785, born in Berlin 1755 came from Paris to Vienna[Wegeler/Ries p180].
Steibelt listened with a "certain condescension" per Ries, then performed a quintet of his own composition; the piano part was complex offering him a chance to show his skill; he also then improvised with great effect.
It was B.'s turn at the piano to improvise;- he went up in his usual, ungainly manner, as if half pushed, taking the violoncello part of Steibelt's quintet in passing, & placed it upside down on the piano then, with one finger, he drummed a theme out of the first few measures.
