Daniel of Kiev - LoveToKnow 1911
DANIEL (DANIL), of Kiev, the earliest Russian travel-writer, and one of the leading Russian travellers in the middle ages.
Though Daniel's narrative, beginning (as it practically ends) at Constantinople, omits some of the most interesting sections of his journey, his work has considerable value.
Several Russian friends and companions, from Kiev and Old Novgorod, are recorded by Daniel as present with him at the Easter Eve "miracle," in the church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Son of Prince Roman, Daniel was only four years old when his father who had united Galicia and Wolynia, died in a battle against the Poles (1205).
It was not until 1221 did Daniel begin to overthrow other pretenders to Roman's succession and assert his authority over Wolynia; and only in 1238 did he finally gain control of Galicia.
Daniel, giving up plans of resistance, lived the rest of his life as an obedient, if a reluctant, vassal of the khan.
