Danielle Darrieux - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born Danielle Yvonne Marie Antoinette Darrieux in Bordeaux, France, Darrieux was the daughter of a medical doctor who was at the time serving with the French Army during World War I but who later died unexpectedly when she was seven years old.
In 1935, Darrieux married director/screenwriter, Henri Decoin, who, after she had made more than two dozen successful films in France, encouraged her to try Hollywood.
Although primarily a film actress, Darrieux appeared on the stage and in 1970, she replaced Katharine Hepburn in the Broadway musical, Coco, which was based on the life of another Frenchwoman, Coco Chanel, but the show did not last very long after Hepburn's departure.

In a career extending over seven decades and more than 100 films Danielle Darrieux has deployed her considerable talents in an impressive diversity of roles.
To this tragic role she lent a fragile dignity and a sense of resignation which crystallized in unsurpassed romantic acting.
During the late 1970s Darrieux increasingly turned her attention to television work and the theater.

 Dark Blue
For without a lifetime of Gallic wine, cheese and sauces, Danielle Darrieux might never have lived to become a vigorous 85-year-old, and director Ozon, adapting a work by the late French playwright Robert Thomas, could not have found a literal "living legend" to complete his tableaux of divas.
Darrieux plays some grand guignol with each of these women, and she sings the closing song with her arm around Sagnier, the baby of the cast.
All he forgot to include was a role for Jeanne Moreau, the mythic New Wave actress, and the only woman who can truly bridge the classic era of Darrieux to the modernism that began in the ‘60s with the legend of Deneuve.

Catherine Deneuve, Danielle Darrieux, Virginie Ledoyen, Fanny Ardant, Emmanuelle Beart, Isabelle Huppert, Ludivine Sagnier, and Firmine Richard are all superb, investing their cardboard characters with a strange emotional resonance--and their costumes are exquisite.
For sheer fetishistic whoopee, there is very little to rival the sight of Deneuve and Ardant getting into a catfight, all hisses and claws, and then sinking to the floor to stroke each other's whiskers.
Nobody is more touching in this regard than Darrieux, her soft wrinkles unable to erode the exquisite heroines she once incarnated for Max Ophuls.
