Daniil Shafran - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Daniil Borisovich Shafran (January 13, 1923, Saint Petersburg – February 7, 1997, Moscow) was one of the finest Russian cellists but is still rather unknown by the large public.
His father, Boris Shafran, was the principle cellist of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra.
He began playing cello at the age of 6.

Shafran admirers and the latest entrant to the lists is the Korean company Aulos Classics, which now presents a slew of CDs licensed from Melodiya, whose famous logo adorns the cover of these discs.
The Ibert displays Shafran’s command of rhythm whilst his slow and intense Debussy is at a tangent from the French tradition as exemplified by an older player such as Maurice Maréchal.
Shafran is an individualist of course and his Bach won’t be to all tastes.

Shafran's première recording of the 2nd Kabalevsky Concerto,of which he was the dedicatee, is coupled with a live performance of Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante, a legendary performance here issued for the first time on CD.
"Daniil Shafran (1923 - 1997) was a staggering player, whose agility - witness his near impossible feats of virtuoso athleticism in the central Allegro Giusto of the Prokofiev - was positively violinistic in its fearless velocity.
If Shafran's white-hot reading of Prokofiev comfortably survives comparison with Rostropovich's two commercial accounts, his Kabalevsky (of which he was the dedicatee) is finer still - a fitting companion to his classic première recording of the first Concerto on Revelation, also with the composer conducting.

Quite apart from being a miniature encyclopedia entry on Shafran this is one of those discs that stays in the memory.
There are no fewer than nine excellent portraits of Shafran in the booklet plus a scene-setting biographical essay, full notes on each piece including a scan of the autograph dedication to Shafran on the score of the Kabalevsky concerto … and Stephen Isserlis's unmissable personal tribute.
Shafran's 1954 recording of the First Concerto had given it currency across the USSR and beyond.

As a relative youngster Daniil Shafran shared important competition prizes with Rostropovich; but his appearances outside of Russia were rare and most of his recordings remained all but unknown beyond specialist circles.
Shafran’s sound is very different to Rostropovich’s, more prone to building vibrato on the note — starting ‘cold’ then gradually intensifying the vibration — or alternating notes with, or without, vibrato.
Shafran’s rapport with pianist Nina Musinyan is a model of persuasive musical collaboration and the slightly scruffy sound has been nicely cleaned up.

DSCH 14 Shostakovich CD Reviews - Shostakovich Plays Shostakovich
That the original recording did include the repeat is confirmed by the fact that the complete performance appeared twice on Revelation: a 1996 Daniil Shafran compilation coupled with Rachmaninov's Cello Sonata (Yakov Flyer on piano; RV 10017); and Vol.
Shafran sounds rather slithery when set beside Rostropovich's 1957 performance with the composer (Russian Disc RD CD 15 005; Revelation RV 70005; both deleted), but he emotes with greater subtlety.
Shafran and Shostakovich also allot the three other movements substantially more time, rendering the sonata as less of a virtuoso showpiece, more of a contemplative discourse.

The surprisingly well-recorded performance of the Cello Sonata is better, as well as faster, than the celebrated one made 16 years later by the composer with Mstislav Rostropovich.
Shafran's cello playing is powerful without sounding ponderous, and poetic without a trace of affectation.
His performance is also filled with imaginative touches--such as the eerie timbral effects created by the way he accelerates during the scherzo's glissandi.

Most importantly, Shafran's account is gripping, and his concentration and tonal refinement never waver.
In particular, the central allegro, taken very rapidly indeed, attests to the phenomenal and flawless virtuosity for which Shafran was famed.
But again, Shafran's playing is riveting; little wonder that the composer (who conducts here) reportedly exclaimed during the sessions, "It's wonderful!
