The Danish education system has its origin in the cathedral- and monastery schools established by the Catholic Church in the early Middle Ages, and seven of the schools established in the 12th and 13th centuries still exist today.
This educational base was maintained nearly unchanged until 1809, when the old Clergyman's School was transformed in accordance with the spirit of the time into a humanistic Civil Servant's School which was to "foster true humanity" through immersion in the ancient Greek and Latin cultures combined with some teaching of natural science and modern languages.
A division which was the backbone of the structure of the Gymnasium until the year 2005.

A substantial stride was taken in the direction of popular education in 1721, when King Frederick IV established 240 schoolhouses bearing the royal insignia and called them Cavalry schools after a division of the country into military districts.
There are different ways of meeting the rules pertaining to compulsory education: by attending the municipal Folkeskole, a private school, by home tuition, or as far as the last 2-3 years of the basic school are concerned by attending one of the alternative school forms: the efterskole, or the youth schools.
The comprehensive concept of the Folkeskole enables students to remain in the same student group with the same classmates from the 1st to the 9th (or 10th) form, sharing the same experiences in all subjects with peers of all types of backgrounds and covering the whole range of ability.
