Secondary education in Denmark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The historical overview of general upper secondary education is divided into four headings, one covering the three-year Gymnasium, one covering the two-year Higher Preparatory Examination (HF), one covering the 3-year Higher Commercial Examination Programme (HHX), and one covering the three-year Higher Technical Examination Programme (HTX).
This educational base was maintained nearly unchanged until 1809, when the old Clergyman's School was transformed in accordance with the spirit of the time into a humanistic Civil Servant's School which was to "foster true humanity" through immersion in the ancient Greek and Latin cultures combined with some teaching of natural science and modern languages.
The HF is thus the "sweeper" of the general upper secondary education level.

Education is principally identified with schooling, though in theory it extends far beyond this, being concerned with intellectual and social development.
Education has been particularly significant as an instrument of social policy, in the sense not only of policies for welfare but also as policies intended to deal with the structure of society.
Education provides a convenient basis for policy for children because of its universal coverage, the acceptance of responsibility for children's welfare, and because it has been easy to justify welfare measures in educational terms.
