Danish West Indies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Danish West Indies (DWI, Dansk Vest Indien) are a former colony of Denmark in the Caribbean, now known as the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The first postage stamp of the Danish West Indies was issued in 1856.
Until 1904, there was no official currency for the Danish West Indies, which had led first to the Spanish milled dollar and then the United States dollar to be used as the local currency.

Hugo Larsen in the Danish West Indies 1904-07
Most important is perhaps the description of Hugo Larsen's art during his stay in Danish West Indies, but in addition the impact that this trip had on the rest of Hugo Larsen's life will be covered.
Perhaps the strongest manifestation of this movement was the inauguration of the Danish West Indian Company by the East Asiatic Company and the building of the three steam ships S/S St. Croix, St. Jan and St. Thomas to boost the trade between Denmark and the colonies.

U.S Virgin Islands - Danish West Indies (1798-1842)
Labelling the blue and white flag with the Dannebrog in canton as ensigns of the Danish West Indies may be interpreted to the effect that they were used instead of the normal Danish ensign, which was almost certainly not the case.
The white flag with the Dannebrog in the canton is the one with the weakest connection to the Danish West Indies.
As connected with the Danish West Indies it is only known from the flag book by Gabriel Hesselberg (by Munksgaard dated by the contents to have been made sometime between 1802 and 1808, Henningsen in The Flag Bulletin gives the date 1805).

Nordic Culture > Vestindien, The Danish West Indies - Scandinavica.com
The Danish colonies on the West Indies were established and managed by a private enterprise called The Danish West India and Guinea Company, with headquarters in Copenhagen and trading centres in the Caribbean and in Guinea.
In 1754 The Danish West India and Guinea Company was bought by the Kingdom of Denmark and the Vestindien became therefore a Royal Danish colony.
Although Danish was the official language of the administration and the military, English became the everyday language of the large foreign population settled in the Royal colony.

The West Indian Local Archives were created by Danish government officials and public authorities in the Danish West Indies.
The West Indian Local Archives are divided into records from general Danish West Indian authorities, from offices on St. Thomas, on St. John, and on St. Croix.
Quite a lot of the West India archival material in the Danish National Archives stems from those branches of the central administration in Copenhagen that dealt with the Danish West Indies.

 Virgin Island History
While public archives are transferred to the Danish National Archives as required by law, private archives are donated on a voluntary basis, since the government is not entitled to demand that such personal property be deposited for archiving.
To ensure optimal storage conditions, the Danish National Archives have recently begun to remove photographs and the like from the archives of private individuals and institutions and to place them in the Private Archives’ Prints and Photographs Collection, where they are grouped according to the private archives from which they were taken.
The old transfer was the removal from Schimmelmann’s mansion in Copenhagen, while the new transfer was the removal to the Danish National Archives from the family manor of Lindenborg at a later date.

His realistic and empathetic descriptions of the people of colour in the Danish West Indies are unparallelled in the art history.
