Danite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During their brief period of formal organization in Missouri, the Danites operated as a vigilante group and took a central role in the events of the Mormon War.
A second outpost of Danites had been organized in Daviess County under the leadership of Lyman Wight, who was also a colonel in the state militia.
The existence of the Danites from June 1838 until the end of the Mormon War, and their participation in key events is well attested.

 Danites
Thus was born the legend of the Danites.
Though no Danite organization was known in Nauvoo or in Utah, the stereotype persisted, becoming a part of national discussion about Utah and the Latter-day Saints and for decades a staple of dime novels (see Mormons, Image of: in Fiction).
Evidence suggests that during this time of fear, clashes, and confusion, Sampson Avard, probably a captain within the public Danite structure and a militia officer, subverted the ideals of both by persuading his men to undertake the criminal activities he later argued were the authorized actions of the whole community.

Mormons and Danites: The Historical Background in Missouri
The Danites apparently were organized in June of 1838 to defend the Mormons from internal enemies who had stirred up much prejudice and even violence against the Saints.
Danite efforts may have resulted in excesses in this regard as well, with unnecessary items taken and, as Avard had taught his men, brought to the storehouse to be "consecrated" to the Saints.
As discussed above, Avard's secretive Danites and the "public Danites" - meaning the entire Mormon armies, the Armies of Israel - were separate organizations, and the leaders of the Armies of Israel were not the leaders of the Danites, though some of them were Danites.

A group of six hundred unruly Danites felt their lot was way too small, so they stubbornly traveled north and took Leshem (Laish) from the Zidonian Canaanites by war, without council from the elders of Israel, defying the laws of war, Deuteronomy 20:10-12, Proverbs 20:18.

The church authorities used the law of the land, the laws of the church, and Danites, to enforce their orders and rid the community of those who were distasteful to the leaders.
That the Danites were bound by their covenants to execute the criminal orders of the high priesthood against apostates and alleged enemies of the church is beyond question.

The 1838 Mormon War and Tales of the "Danites"
Joseph was not the mastermind behind the Danites, but he gave them at least partial support initially, and his encouragement of militant action to defend the Saints may have made it easier for Avard and his Danites to flourish.
Avard said Joseph was the one behind the Danites, that he was guilty of many great crimes against the Missourians, and that Danites swore to kill any who revealed their secrets or fought against Joseph Smith and the Church.
Even in the early Danite meetings, contentions had arisen over the volatile and secretive tendencies of its leaders It was during this period that some Church members began to distrust Sidney Rigdon, who may have supported the band by his incendiary public rhetoric.

There continued to be isolated incidences attributed to the "Danites" in Anti-Mormon books and press articles until the railroad came to the territory in l869.
However, the name "Danite" continues to excite readers and historians of the early Utah period, even though the evidence of excessive wrong doing outside the law, appears to be greatly exaggerated.

Hickman was not a Mormon during the Danite heyday in Missouri, and there is no reliable evidence that the Danites, as such, survived after 1838 as an organization.
Hilton, however, put the matter in perspective when she said that he "continued to espouse the Danite philosophy." While it is true that the original organization ceased to exist in the late 1830's, it is also clear that the church had men in early Utah who performed exactly the same function.

When President Smith stated that the Danites met on August 4 for the "third time in Adamondiahman," it is clear that he was looking back to the meetings of July 21 and 28 as the first and second.
But, in the period between July 14 and September 1, 1838, in Daviess County, the Danites, for all their violent rhetoric (which undoubtedly played a catalytic role in preparing for actual violence later), by comparison with their later deeds, were relatively quiet.
Nonetheless, it must be recognized that the secret continuance of such a militant group of vigilantes among the Latter-day Saints, with or without the guidance of the First Presidency, was a dangerous expedient which ultimately paved the way for the expulsion of the Mormons from the State of Missouri.
