European settlement of Dannevirke began on 15 October 1872 with the arrival of 13 Danish and eight Norwegian families brought out under the Vogel Immigration Scheme.
As the land was cleared, so farmland was developed and Dannevirke was growing toward becoming an important service centre for the rural community.
Farming from the coastal areas was moving to the west while from the Ruahine Ranges was moving east and in due course came together.

Dannevirke is located on terraces in the upper valley of the Manawatu River.
Dannevirke means “a work of the Danes.” The name was applied to the site before the settlers arrived, probably in memory of “Dannevirke” or “Thyra's Vold”, a wall built in the ninth and tenth centuries in Denmark for defence against the Saxons.
In 1877 the town was administered by the Dannevirke Road Board, in 1885 it became a town district, and in 1892 was made a borough.

Arthur W. Christensen of Dannebrog, in A Story of the Danish Settlement in Dannevirke, describes the early settlement of this unique Danish hamlet in Howard County.
Christensen was the son of Danish pioneers, and his history was dedicated to "the memory of those sturdy pioneers who worked and built their homes on Nebraska's boundless prairies." Most of the Dannevirke described by Christensen still stands today.
In February of 1874 Niels Hansen and Soren Johnson homesteaded in northwestern Howard County because of timber and water along the North Loup River and because of the promising soil.

Dannevirke’s Masonic Hotel is a victim of the smoking ban introduced into bars on 10 December 2004.
A non-smoking patron said “Our pubs used to be the towns social centre, but not any more, as our smoking mates rarely turn up, and when they do, they spend most their time outside, and us non-smokers have head out there with them”.
Anti-smoking groups such as ASH and the Smokefree Coalition say the smoking ban is a success, that most licensees are complying with the legislation, and that in general, the ban has had little adverse affect financially, upon the hotel industry.

Whariti Hill climb is an event put on by The Dannevirke Car Club, and uses 8.3 kilometres of road up towards the Whariti Tower, visible on the sky line at the top of the Ruahine ranges north of Woodville.
Because of the complications of going through private land, rather than turn right at the intersection at the five kilometer mark, the route follows the top of the ridge for another 3.3 kilometres, taking in some of the most breath taking views (as long as you do not put the car over the side).
For this event the Rover was seeded 48th out of a field of 91 which was a little disappointing as we had hoped to have finally reached a seeding in the top half, which does not mean much put part of my goals.
