Don Pullen from 1973 to 1975 and drummer Dannie Richmond was one of the musicians who was a member of the Mingus groups for a very long time: 1956-1967,1969-1970 and l973-l978.After Mingus died he was the musical director of the Mingus Dynasty (1979-1980).
But the four musicians have their own strong points too: George Adams is a powerful player with intense gospel roots and the capability to use the harmonic and linear freedom of the post-Coltrane saxophonists: Don Pullen is very exciting with his right hand clusters played very rapidly.
Drummer Dannie Richmond was a very special case, he could play in a conservative jazz group but lie was also at home in a free-jazz unit.

 Charles Mingus: Tijuana Moods
This had the result of restoring some solos that had been edited to shorten the original recordings, or in some cases allowing us to hear alternate solos that were every bit as good as the original.
The edits on the original tracks are not particularly subtle, and it doesn't take too close a listen to hear the cut on Danny Richmond's drum solo in "Dizzy Moods", for example.
The alternate version contains Danny Richmond's full drum solo, which is severly edited on the original track.

Interesting stab at pop-jazz by longtime Mingus Associate Dannie Richmond.
The album consists of about half pop and rock (Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind", Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen", etc) covers which actually work into jazz better than one would expect, and half light originals penned by various players and contributors to the date.

Drummer Dannie Richmond's debut recording as a leader looks promising on the surface.
With the presence of pianist Jaki Byard (a fellow alum of Charles Mingus' various groups), bassist Cecil McBee, and either Jimmy Raney or Toots Thielemans on guitar, things look good.
Maybe this long unavailable Impulse LP was intended to attract the hip college crowd of the mid-1960s to veteran jazz artists like Dannie Richmond; though it is likely that everyone who gave this disc a brief hearing quickly moved on to matters of more urgency.
