The notion that Elfman has overextended himself simply isn't the case -- the orchestrations here are rich and full, the lyrics clever and appropriate for all ages, and the overall ambience created by the album is one of slightly spooky, very kooky fun.

Danny Elfman tried to put the brass and the woodstring themes into something that tried to echo Jerry Goldsmith's brillent score for the 1968 film, regretfully the finished music sounds so uneven with themes and melodies that do not convey the sense of wonder and fear that the Goldsmith score has.
Danny Elfman's score, for director Tim Burton's 2001 remake of Planet Of The Apes, may not be as bad as the film itself.
At the same time, Elfman also tries to recreate the gripping tension of his Batman pieces and seems to invoke a composition that is brutal as it is unrelenting, but turns out to be, on the other hand, nothing more than melody-challenged.

 Spider-Man (Soundtrack) by Danny Elfman
An interesting choice, however, was made in choosing Danny Elfman to score the film.
Certainly a valid fear, though Elfman is quite adept at providing an heroic energy to his score, and it is evident from track one.
Elfman’s Spider-man theme dwells in rising minor chords, and as such, does not overtly suggest heroism, but does appropriately imply power, as consistent with the theme of the film (and let’s remember it again, here: “With great power comes great responsibility.”)

For those concerned with timelines, Elfman gradually began trading in his former lifestyle as a wild and rambunctious post modern punk when around 1985 when he was commissioned by friend Tim Burton to score Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
Granted it would be another 10 years before he fully retired from the Boingo recording and touring maelstrom, but still to this day Elfman is perhaps the most famous pop musician to make the switch from the sweat soaked live stage to the austerity of the home studio and soundstage.
Elfman laughs at the query, "Since a composer has no groupies, I'd have to say Oingo Boingo." Which is to say that the possibility of there being any crazed Danny Elfman film score groupies lurking about in the shadows is pretty damn slim.

 Titles by Danny Elfman
It’s as if composer Danny Elfman’s fertile relationship with director Tim Burton had been building up to this, their 11th collaboration and perhaps the one that best encapsulates their shared aesthetics: It’s hard to think of a subject better suited to the two men than an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Danny Elfman reportedly faced a similar dilemma with A Civil Action: he stepped in to score Steven Zaillian’s adaptation of Jonathan Harr’s bestseller when the legendary composer Ennio Morricone bowed out.
Elfman’s score is an amalgam of a number of modern influences: edgy, percussive minimalism, haunting, effective choral flourishes, and electronically generated/altered elements are combined with a spare use of the orchestra to create a work that relies more on mood than on melody.
