Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar (born April 6, 1946) is a guitarist and session musician.
Kortchmar's work with singer-songwriters such as Carole King, Carly Simon and James Taylor, helped defined the signature sound of the singer-songwriter era of the 1970s.
Kortchmar first came to prominence in the mid-1960s playing with bands in his native New York City, such as The Kingbees and the Flying Machine, fronted by then-unknown Taylor.

What Kortchmar does derive from his days as a sideman for the Seventies' leading singer/songwriters is a deeply ingrained respect for "the song" as the most important aspect of any recording venture.
Kortchmar has filled the tracking rooms and corridors of Record One with the cream of L.A. session musicians, including drummer Rick Marotta, bassist Randy Jackson, guitarist Waddy Wachtel and keyboardists Paul Shaffer and Bill Payne.
Kortchmar went on to a bizarre assortment of late-Sixties gigs, including six months with the Fugs-then and forever the undisputed masters of New York's Lower East Side post-beatnik ribaldry.

In 1967 Kortchmar joined the Fugs, appearing on their Tenderness Junction LP before following bassist Charles Larkey to California, where they teamed with King in the short-lived trio the City.
Amidst this flurry of activity, Kortchmar and Larkey also reunited in the band Jo Mama, debuting with a self-titled 1970 LP; J Is for Jump followed a year later.
In 1973 Kortchmar made his solo debut with Kootch; a second effort, Innuendo, appeared towards the end of the decade, but for the most part he remained best known as a backing musician, lending his talents to records from artists including Linda Ronstadt, Warren Zevon, Harry Nilsson and Jackson Browne.

The Rolling Stones were live on September 20th in London at the Twickenham stadium and there’s a possible sighting of Danny Kortchmar in the audience, among Rolling Stones’ fans.
Danny has always been collaborating with the Stones: he played in early Seventies in some sessions with Mick Jagger (never officially released), with Bill Wyman (in Monkey Grip” 1974 and “Stone Alone” 1976) and more recently with Keith Richards.
I knocked on Danny's door, and held out the eagle guitar when he answered, and he was totally blown away, not knowing that I had built it for him.

Carole and James were long-time friends; they met through Danny Kortchmar, a boyhood friend of James' who was in a group called the City with Carole.

BOSTON, June 11, 2004 — Known as an architect of the singer/songwriter sound of the 70's, Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar is in the midst of a three-day visiting artist residency at Berklee College of Music where he is producing a song written by student Buffy Hubelbank.
Kotchmar continued backing King on her subsequent solo career; in 1970, Kortchmar also reunited with Taylor for his breakthrough album Sweet Baby James, and with his subsequent work on King's landmark Tapestry, he established himself among the top West Coast session guitarists of the period.
By the mid-1990s he was also producing a new generation of performers, including Freedy Johnston and the Spin Doctors and continues to be in demand as a producer, recent albums include Dada, Evan and Jaron and Hanson.
