However, Jeremy Hardy has always made clear that he supported Danny McNamee (whose conviction was overturned in 1998, and who himself has consistently denied any sympathy for the IRA) as the victim of a miscarriage of justice.
His outspoken support for the release of Danny McNamee, who was wrongly convicted in 1987 of involvement in the Irish Republican Army's Hyde Park bombing of 1982, led to accusations (which were later retracted) that he was an IRA supporter.
To BBC Radio 4 audiences Jeremy Hardy is also famous for his incredibly off-key singing, as showcased in I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, and for the socialist rants, in which he loses himself, on the News Quiz.

The Whitemoor incident took place as republican POW Paul Magee and miscarriage of justice victim Danny McNamee were being moved from Belmarsh Jail to Full Sutton Prison late last week.
McNamee, republican prisoner Liam McCotter and Andy Russell, an English prisoner who also took part in the Whitemoor escape attempt, are all taking cases alleging that they were taken to a special cell and assaulted for five hours by prison officers after the escape attempt in September 1994.
Two of the six prisoners whose trial on charges relating to the Whitemoor breakout collapsed at the end of January, have been taken back to Whitemoor and threatened by prison officers, according to solicitor Gareth Peirce.

Greenwich and Lambeth Nalgo had passed motions on self determination and recognition for Irish workers but the Metropolitan Nalgo turned them down the motion on recognition believing it to have been debated at last years conference which was untrue.

The last Irish miscarriage of justice case in England was finally ended today after Danny McNamee won his appeal against his conviction for conspiracy to cause explosions in London in 1982.
The three appeal judges repeated the begrudging conclusion made in the infamous Birmingham Six case when they alleged that McNamee might not be innocent of the charge.
Danny's case was eventually referred back to the Court of Appeal on a number of issues, including disclosure of evidence at the time of his trial, scientific and fingerprint evidence.
